Hi - I have had a wireless connection with my laptop for about a year now. The Linksys router WRT54G has been working all along - lately I started having DHCP problems - the ADSL modem linked to the lynksys is the DHCP server and I cannot get an IP no from it on my laptop (which is in the same place it has always been )

I then gave the laptop a static IP and things seems to work fine but I am getting wireless connection hassels - does the Winter have anyhting to do with this - the signal seems to be good then bad and then I have to 'repair' the connection and then I get full signal again.

The pC with an ethernet connection to the Lynksys is working fine.

I am thinking of rather puting a cable down to the laptop in the dining room.

Any other wireless Access Points Popped up in your area in the last year?
any WISPs blasting the spectrum close to you?

try change the channel. it may help.

dunno if the linksys has an automatic frequency setting, but if it has set it at that, as the AP will check the available frequencies to see which is the least busy / noisy.

This setting will usually take a few minutes to become active as the AP needs to find the best channel to work on. as I said dunno if it's got it, but I've got Netgear, 3com and a cheapie Mecer and they all have the setting.

Had the same problem at the office, Ap would work fine and then start acting up. Changed the Ap to Auto frequency select. Works fine after the change.

Jeeees thanks guys - I changed the channel from 11 to 1 and its working much better.. Its flying again. I also enabled frame burst. Will see how it acts out over the next few days. Still does not want to give me an IP tho. The Telkom 5100 is set for DHCP not the linksys. If I change the ADSL router to an old Planet, it works fine so there is something with the telkom router not lekker.

Unfortunately the router has not got an auto setting for the channel... another thought, I have a cordless dect phone standing next to the wireless router, would this bugger it around?
