Background
I have my ADSL router in a room upstairs (where the telephone/adsl jack is). I have an HTPC in the lounge (downstairs and about 15m away from the router in a straight line). I have two Linksys WRT54GL routers (both using DD-WRT firmware) in a wireless bridge setup. I have my HTPC connected to the second WRT54GL via Ethernet. The signal between the two routers is pretty weak (It gets to about about -80dB at its best). The routers are rated at 54Mbps and the primary router is setup to use 802.11g for wireless.
File Transfers
If I try to transfer files between the computer connected to the primary router and the HTPC (via wireless – 802.11g), I get about 4Mbps max.
Transfers from my laptop in the bedroom to the HTPC range between (1.9Mbps to 4Mbps).
When I transfer between the computer connected to the primary router and the laptop (in the bedroom), I get around 17Mbps (signal ranges between -58 to -70db). If the laptop is the same room as the computer, I get around 18.5Mbps (signal strength of -28 to -35dB).
Issue
So what’s this all about then? I am looking to add a small form-factor HTPC to my bedroom so I can stream content that is on my main HTPC. Some of the stuff on the HTPC is HD (720p and 1080p) and the 4Mbps speeds are not cutting it for that content.
The WIFI signal from the bedroom to the Primary Router is pretty strong (around x dB).
Possible solutions?
My initial thoughts are that these are my options:
1. Wireless Extender
2. Cabling – Primary Router to Secondary Router; and Primary Router to mini-HTPC
The bedroom is almost directly above the lounge area (where the HTPC). Around what price would a wireless extender be? Any suggestions as to who I could get in touch with to get a quote on cabling?
Any other suggestions, thoughts?
