Hi guys,

I need some help. I am looking to connect 2 of my houses(10m seperation between them) with each other. The uncapped ADSL is in the one house. What would your recommendation be regarding this. in the other house I am looking at installing an AP to cover 2 small rooms. In the main house there is 4room where I would also like to install AP's there for complete wireless coverage. Would a plan like this work? And is there any remommendations you would advise to better options. I do not want to lay cabling across to the other house tho.

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.:)

Hi,

Sounds to me like you need 2 wireless ap's. Both i do believe, should support the repeater function. You connect the adsl connection to one of your computers on the network. You place your first wireless access point in the first house. you place the second in the second house and set it up as a repeater, where as it relays any connections in the second house, across to the first house and to the adsl connection if needed via internect connection sharing. ics can be tricky to set up initially but does work perfectly from my experiance, even over different versions of windows. ics will set the computer with the adsl connection to 196.168.0.1, set the first ap to 192.168.0.2, the second ap should pick up on this. All other computers and devices should be set to obtain ip adresses automatically. Just ensure the DHCP server is turned off on both ap's, i cant really remember for sure but you may need to set the first ap to point to 192.168.0.1 as the gateway.

You could allso set your adsl router to connect directly to the ap, then use the routers/ap's dchp server to assign adresses to the computers on the network, this way you wouldnt need the ics computer running at all times. Either way its preferred that you use a lan line to the ap, not wireless, keeping in mind that the ap's should be placed as close to each other as possible.

You'd need to keep in mind that the wireless signal will decrease if there are alot of walls for it to get through, allso the outside atmosphere will decrease the signal further. I'd go for a wireless n network to ensure that the speeds obtained remain useable. Allso, invest in a relaible brand of ap. Have to stress using good ap's for this though, seeing as the signal will travel outdoors. Ensure that the ap will downgrade the signal from n to g/b depending on the hardware configuration of the client devices. This way you wont have to fork out a small fortune buying wireless n cards for all computers. It will work on other devices like blackberry's too.

You will not need more than two ap's if you invest in the right hardware.

Allso if you do not choose to run a wired connection from the ics computer to the ap, ensure that the ics computer has a good wireless n card installed, not one of those gimmicky usb sticks.

Hope that helps.
