Good day folks!

I am not a moaning type of guy, but what has to be done has to be done, not so? Let me start by saying that I am a firm believer in technology and modern communication as the tools needed for the development of our country. Why our government fails to realize that we need cheap and wide-spread access to broadband is baffling. Maybe if Thabo Mbeki and friends were coaxed into surfing more “erotic” material we would see some moving and shaking going on in this regard. Unfortunately things are not coming together the way it should!

I am hearing all kinds of excuses as to why the government is shy to introduce more competitors to the telecommunications market. One of the most commonly heard excuses is the one about South Africa being too small (population wise) to support too many Telco’s. I must be honest I can see the point, but then why is the government allowing Telkom to overcharge us? They have free reign in terms of pricing! Yes, I am well aware of the role ICASA is supposed to play, but they seem to disappoint more often than not.

The least the government can do is make it legal for the people of South Africa to wire themselves where possible. And we all know the best way to do this is via wireless. No digging, no drilling and no cables that can belong to anybody. Just a free and open network for the people by the people. All our government needs to do is sign a little paper called law which states the parameters within which we are allowed to do this. Something like this:

- - - - - - - - - - -

Hereby the government of South Africa as voted for by the people endorses free and open communication as established and maintained by its own people via wireless data networks. We expect the people to not hamper, interfere with or disable existing civil aviation, emergency services and military communications. Thus we put the bottom and top end frequency and strength of said wireless devices as such and such… May the people of South Africa develop and prosper in peace.

I propose that until such time we rise up in revolt by putting up hundreds if not thousands of hotspots all over the country. Yes it will be illegal, but we should make sure it doesn’t interfere with aviation, emergency and other important radio bases communication services. This in order not to give government a stick to beat us with. My apologies to the government. We the people need this! Believe me; it IS in the BEST INTEREST of South Africa.

Let’s put them up!

Cheers

My motto : what they don't know won't hurt them, so why bitch to get it into legislation? :)

You could make everyone that uses the network to sign an indemnity (spelling) form that states that if anyone was to notify government officials of your activity, you can have his balls for breakfast *ew*
