Hey guys

Can anyone help me with a problem im having, i have set up a wireless hotspot in my coffee shop just a normal 512k adsl and a Netgear wireless router is there software that can help me manage bandwidth to stop customers from downloading large files and how can i make it just possible for them to browse not download stuff?

Thanks

Hook it up to a Linux firewall like IPCop or Smoothwall, enable squid (http proxy) and set the file size limits to whatever you wish.
You can also shape the bandwidth per user or per group.

If doesn't even matter if the user disconnects and reconnects to get a new IP address and try to resume a large download - Squid will stop that sort of thing.

I would like to do the same by not charging people but are afraid that some people might abuse it.

Is there a Windows solution?

The best that I've found for this is to implement a standard hotspot solution but then just give the prepaid vouchers away for free. That way you're not charging them - but you have full control over exactly how much they use.

You can PM me for more info on the system that I can provide.

@ ambo
mikrotik?
Nope - Linksys with custom software... similar to what henk was discussing in the other thread. Linksys is less than 10% of the cost of a full Mikrotik solution.

I've then designed a centralised billing infrastructure which makes the hotspot much more financially viable. Building your own billing platform does not make economic sense unless you have a large number of hotspots.

and what are the costs of your centralised billing infrastructure?

hehe routerboard = R495 for a nice RouterBOARD 750G L4 with case and PSU
linksys wrt54g AP =almost twice the price more

So have anyone of you found a solution for this hotspot thingy?
because I also want a pre-paid hotspot now, with customizable login page, and not the corp looking mikrotik captive protaltjie.....

Ai, why revive such an old thread...

coz I'm super desperate to find a free solution for myself, and that makes me super search all the threads worldwide worst then a google bot... I just can't find a solution that will work for me, to begin with I have noooo... idea how to install chillispot, php, mySQL and apache and config it . lol, and I think using a rouberbordjie is way better but I have no idea to config it....lol....fml.....:erm::cry::cry::erm::confused:

D-Boy: you can customize the looks of the MikroTik portal.

WHAT... you can do that:wtf:
Now I'm even more exited about my new rouberboard 750G

I have edited only the login page during the MikroTik basic training course :)

Have you actually used their stuff before + how much does it cost? I really hate it when people provide enterprise sized solutions for individuals![/QUO

for a hotspot its not to expensive and it is perfect fot the hospitality access and the new unit comes with a buildin AP
