I read in the Cape Times today that Telkom are bringing out wireless hotspots around the country like Starbucks in the USA. With Sentech & Telkom competing this could be an interesting battle. Lets' celebrate... for now anyway.

Not to discourage you, but this isn't really compettition between Telkom and Sentech.

What Sentech are deploying are 3G based long range cellular wireless broad band. The Sentech MyWireless package is actually just a small 3G receiver as you would find on a 3G cellular phone, passing IP traffic to a PC via USB.

The technology Telkom are deploying are Wi-Fi hot spots, meaning, short range (usually only within buildings) 802.11b and 802.11g dual-band public access points.

To gain access to one of these hot spots, you must of course, be a TelkomInternet ADSL subscriber. This technology is mostly useful for allowing users to get internet access in air ports, train stations, parks, sports venues and in some cases, shopping malls.

Wi-Fi isn't very effective when being used to function as a platform for an ISP, I'm sure those of you living in Johannesburg remember the desasterous short life of MegaWan, who tried to run an ISP off 802.11b networking.

The fact of the matter is that Wi-Fi just wasn't designed for that use, and if you boost it to a level where it becomes useful, you are transmitting micro waves strong enough to cook food over night, into every area where you want to provide service.

Currently, Sentech are the only company working with 3G in South Africa, so there's probably some time to go before we see compettition in that market.

Sentech using 3G technology really intrigues me. Who know, perhaps over time they will become SA's first fully 3G operator like Three in the UK. Exciting stuff!
