My uncle is out of the reach of a Telkom ADSL exchange but he's only 5km away from me and I am ADSL enabled. I would like to set up a wireless network with him and share my internet connection. I think I have the hardware covered but I would like to know if there is any software or anything really that I can use to limit his speed/bandwidth use for the month just to ensure that he doesn't abuse my connection.

THanks

I don't think it's legal.

Isn't it only illegal if he charges a price for the connection? (according to the ECA)

It can't be illegal, I'm providing him with what Telkom Cannot, Telscum cannot profit from him anyway, I wish it was illegal, maybe then they would do something to get him an adsl line. Regardless, does anyone have an A to my Q?

As far as I know it's illegal even if I share my connection with my buddy next door with wifi.

You may not cross borders.

Just do it!!!

get your self 2 wrt54gl's and flash tomato firmware or dd-wrt firmware and setup QoS rules

I'd suggest if you want todo this, use the 5.8Ghz band, which is also licence free, but will have much, much less interference with 2.4Ghz.

Re: the legal aspects. You don't need a VANS licence, since you're not going to sell him internet & profit from it.
You probably also don't need a HAM licence, unless you need a 30m+ mast in your backyard, so you're not really breaking any laws.

Before you need to worry about someone comeing to knock down your equipment, they'll be going after the big boys who's profitting R250,000 pm from wifi installations :)

net limiter I hear is what you looking for.
what software you can use on your wireless hardware depends on what equipment you going to buy.

100% Headstrong

depends where you are will depend on your frequency and also depends if you got the hardware already or not

I paid Miro a visit yesterday and had a look at the unit but I'm sad to report that despite my efforts we were convinced that without decent Line of Sight we were not going to get it working. :(

At least they didnt sell it to you and say "ja it might work"

Miro is right, if you dont have 100% LOS then the link can get dodge.

Firstly, you are not allowed to connect under these conditions, however in the same breath, what is stopping you if Telkom can't provide such services. The rest is as easy as mentioned.
