Wireless N router setup

Ok I'm having real difficulty setting up my wireless n router.

Now I got a normal adsl2+ d-link router with 4 ports and it doesn't have wifi.....

I run this router in full bridge mode so each pc can connect with their own ISP accounts via pppoe...

Its working well since each pc you must set a lan ip cause dhcp is not enabled when the router is in bridge mode.

Today I bought a wireless n router. I want to set it up with pppoe detail in the wireless n router so people connecting through wifi is using that internet account. The router does support pppoe and has that function but I'm battling to get it working.

Any 1 got a similar setup going or am I trying to be complicated

So you replaced the original one completely?

Most support half bridge, so I'd set it up with the main account loaded in the router & then all the ones that need to can still dial out via pppoe. i.e. You can override the default a/c at will by dialing out, even over wifi.

Or am I misunderstanding what you want to do?

Basically what I have is

1 adsl router with no wifi and 1 wireless n router with no adsl capabilities. Its commonly used for cable modems as they don't have build in wifi but they work with adsl routers too.

http://trendnet.com/products/proddetail.asp?status=view&prod=225_TEW-711BR&cat=174

That is the wireless router I got.

btw my d-link router doesn't want to work in half bridge mode so lekker and it doesn't solve the issue that the dlink doesn't have wifi...

Ah I see. There should be a way to set the trendnet to act as a pure AP - not familiar with them though so can't help more.

btw why didn't you just get an AP?

It has a cool feature that allows the wireless n router to dial a pppoe connection. That will make every 1 that is connected to the wireless n router use that account. so I can use a 1mb uncapped account formy wif on my phone and download on my macbook without it making the connection slow for gaming or stuff.

maybe not the best way but would be ideal for my situation.

I guess what I'm going to try now is just have the adsl router in hald bridge mode with the 1mb account on the router and every 1 else dialing their own connection. Maybe then the wireless n router will allow me to share that internet connection in the adsl router

Should be quite simple. Just connect ethernet cable to the WAN port of Trendnet to any port on your other router. Then create a PPPoE connection of your choice on the Trendnet. Or did you try that already?

hmm...haven't seen that before. Wild guess...try pointing the gateway & dns on the trendnet at the dlink. Also make sure its all on the same subnet.

You're on a 4/10 line then, no? Because I don't see this helping unless you on a 4/10 line *and* you're main data account is not capable of maxing the line. Could work though so def try.

You probably already know this, but just in case: With full bridge you lose 100% of the routers QoS abilities.

yeah did and it suppose to be simple but the wireless n router is not connecting via pppoe with the details that I configured it with. The wifi and lan on it works but doesn't have internet cause yeah its not connecting.

Yeah that is what I'm trying to do cause there are a couple of people using the 4Mbps line and stupid telkom doesn't want to upgrade me to 10 even though its supposed to be supported.

Post a screenshot of what the PPPoE config screen looks like and how you have it configured.

Stupid question: have you connected the modem to the TRENDnet router's WAN port? Because if you connected it to any of the other 4 ports, the PPPoE connection probably won't work.

The D-Link router should support half-bridge mode, so technically you can go and disable DHCP on it and let it dial the PPPoE connection, instead of having the TRENDnet one dial it. You can then setup the TRENDnet to have the D-Link modem's IP as its default gateway. That way, your WiFi users will connect to the Internet via the PPPoE connection dialed by the D-Link modem.

All the other LAN users still have to dial their own PPPoE connections to get Internet access, unless they cheat by manually specifying their default gateway too.

Thanks guys for the help I just managed to like bypass what I wanted to do with something that will work too.

I put the dlink in half bridge mode so it dials the 1Mbps uncapped account. then each pc can just dial to get the 4Mbps uncapped account. Works.

Changed the wireless n router to detect dhcp and it sharing the 1Mbps uncapped account over wifi now. Its its kinda what I wanted...... Thanks

Thanks pada I will look into that but for my house setup it will be same either way unless I didn't want the pcs to use the details in the router and use their own accounts via pppoe but it doesn't matter if they do.

Hi There,
Pada is usually very good on these so I would look carefully at his suggestion if I was you.

My recommendation was pretty much like you have it now, with the exception that I would've disabled DHCP on the D-Link and then manually setup the IP addresses on the TRENDnet, such that its default gateway and DNS points to that of the D-Link.

eg. D-Link's IP is 192.168.1.1
Then configure the TRENDnet's WAN to like:
IP address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 192.168.1.1

Why would you want to have both a 4Mbps and 1Mbps uncapped account!? Why not just put the 4Mbps uncapped account on the D-Link.
Or is your 1Mbps account unshaped and the 4Mbps one shaped? I would guess that it would be cheaper to just get a 4Mbps uncapped & unshaped (or neat unshaped) account for less than 2 uncapped accounts.
