Hi
Can anyone help me in configuring a secure wireless network for this hardware.
We have an adsl connection at the office which is hooked up to 2 desktop machines via lan cable.
I am trying to setup the wireless side of it so that it is secure and that it requires a password or something of the sort.
I have read the manual that came with the router but am not getting this config right. I can see the network but cannot access it.
Anyone help?

Equipment
HP NX7010 notebook
SMC 7904WBRA Barricade wireless broadband router

thx

i suggest getting it set up without encryption first to make sure the hardware is compatible. even though they are all "wi-fi compatible", i've noticed some equipment just doesn't work together.

When you set up encryption, try to use WEP.

set up mac-filtering and do not run DHCP. these last two will just make it a bit more difficult for someone to get in!

most importantly, change the default password!!

which operating system are you using on the notebook?

Hi
Thx
I am using Win XP Pro on the notebook.

I can succesfully setup the unsecured wireless network and connect to it no probs, when I try to secure it though things go pear shaped.

The secure network is visible, but I just cant get in. I am doing something stupid, just not sure what, hehe.

set up OPEN WEP encryption with an ascii key on the router. use 5 characters:
abcde

create the connection manually in XP:

Click on "Start | Settings | Network Connections"
Right-click on your wireless connection and select properties.
Remove all connections in the list.
Click Add
Type in the SSID
Select Open and WEP in the dropdowns
Un-tick the "The Key is provided..." checkbox
Type in abcde in both Network Key boxes.
OK your way out.

Right-click on the wireless connection and select Disable.
Right-click on the wireless connection and select Enable.

Does it work?

Thx folks
I have managed to get it sorted with 128bit ASCII WEP encyption.
All seems to be working fine.

A last question if I may, is this secure enough for doing online banking from my notebook, or should some other encryption be added?

I have obviousely made sure that all machines on this small network are spyware free, have up to date AnitVirus software (NOD32) and have Zone Alarm running on all.
Thx again.

Yeah thats pretty strong encryption... and anyway its not like the wireless signal is gonna go very far outside ur office... try walk around and see how far u can take ur laptop while keeping a signal... Also disable SSID broadcast on the router (sort of hides ur wireless network)...

as long as you don't keep the key i posted here :)

the internet banking session is encrypted using SSL certificates and is secure. for banking, you basically have double encryption (WEP and SSL).

im just wondering, isn't WPA encryption supposed to be stronger than WEP?

Yes it is much stronger as long as you use a good WPA key not abcde ;)

but some APs dont support WPA
