I have managed to connect my PC wirelessly to my router and am able to access Internet this way in XP.

How do I go about setting up this connection on Ubuntu 9.10?

Make sure "enable wireless" is ticked under your network manager and that your drivers are installed for your wi fi card. Once the wi fi is picked up by your computer it will show up under your network manager (top right handside of your screen). Click on the icon. Click on your network, enter your secutity pin and it will connect. Mine is connected the same way and works 100%

The enable wireless is ticked but when I left click I see that Wireless connection is unmanaged. I then tried creating a VPN connection but nothing happened.

And the driver for your wifi is installed?

Go to system, then administration and then hardware drivers. If you have wifi card then it will suggest a driver. Click on it and then click the install button. It will download it and then a reboot needs to be done.

I can't connect to the internet on Linux because I am not on the network.

can you connect via ethernet to the router? best to do it that way.

Post the output of lspci | grep -E '(Network|Ethernet)' here

My appologies. Or can you perhaps borrow someones 3G usb modem just to download the driver?

the simple solution is to connect to the router. of course he hasn't given us the constraints to the router so that may not be possible. but i always prefer to point to the easy solution until given the obstacles to achieving the goal.

True. But the router in our house for example is in the ceiling, so getting in there to plug in would be a bit of a mission :)

He has options so he must just do what is easiest for him...he has gone quiet though.

The lspci shows the following to be you wireless

Code:
02:02.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 20)

Do a google search for Ubuntu Realtek rtl-8185 wireless. You'll probably find a number of solutions. I unfortunately am not familiar with that.
