Guys, I need to enlist your help here.

I am looking at buying the D-Link DWL-900AP+ Wirless Lan. What I want to know is:
<ul><li>Does this device allow me to share the internet connection? </li>
Does it automatically connect via some sort of web based interface where you will fill in your username/password<li> </li><li>Is R 759 excl a reasonable price? </li></ul>

Mainly, I do not want to have a computer running 24/7 in order to maintain the internet connection. I know that with a normal wired hub, you can set up PPPoE connections, but then they aren't shared.

Please help [:)]

The 900AP+ is sold as a pure 802.11b Access Point (If I recall correctly)
(I don't think it supports PPPoE either - But I'll see what I can find)
As for price... that is not bad at all.

If it is just sold as a wireless access point, then I will need to plug it right into the hub, and keep the smoothwall box running. I'm trying to avoid this though, I am not too pleased about having to run that PC 24/7, especially considering our network isn't that big enough to warrant that yet.

I just would like to check - I would simply run a straight-through CAT5 cable from one of the ports on my hub to this device, and it would work in a similar way to basically plugging in another hub into that port, except it is wireless?
 
I think that what you are looking for is the DI-514 Wireless Router.

Rhino has the 802.11g version of this and it should handle what you need.

Yeah, 900ap+ is just the AP, its not a Router. The DI 514 is probably the best bet, all the 900ap+ does is connect your wireless network to the normal cable network.

Where is that price from?

I am using the MUCH faster version of this. I connect the modem direly to the unit in the WAN port, and thats it. Without me doing anything, as soon as I turn the router on, not even the pc, it will connect for me. Then all I do is turn on my machine and bobs your uncle it connected. The router and modem now stay on all the time, and I can connect up to 254 wireless users.

Oh, forgot to mention, It has a very nice built in firewall as well. And 802.11b will be fine for a home wireless internet based network, I made sure of that last night. Where was that price from?

Donovan, the D-Link DI-624 is a nice all-in-one product if you want wireless. It has the Atheros chipset for the WLAN so supports the Atheros Super-G (108Mbps) mode, as well as being backward compatible to 802.11g (54Mbps) and 802.11b (11Mbps). The 10/100 WAN port covers just about anything including PPPoE for ASDL and MyWireless modems (I have tested it successfully with MyWireless). It also has a 4-port 10/100 switch. Nice thing about ALL the Ethernet ports is that they are auto cable sensing, so you don't have to worry about whether the cable is straight or crossover. Yes, all the configuration is via the web-based interface, and you enter your username/password on the WAN setup page. It is a proper router, so the internet is shared, and is also protected by the built-in firewall. Many other functions are built-in: DHCP Server, Virtual Server, IP/MAC address filters, URL/domain blocking and DMZ.

If you don't want wireless, the the D-Link DI-804HV is cheaper. It has much the same features as above (except the wireless) and also has a serial port so you can setup a serial ISDN/56k modem as a backup internet link. Email me off-forum if you want more details.
 
Di-604 would be better for not using wireless, its much cheaper, and does just as much!

All the new dlink products have cable autosensing, and I highly dout u will use VPN tunnels. and it also still has all the general stuff.

Okay, want to set up a cabled network since I already have one running on a normal hub. Where could I get a plain router that does the job and how much?

Also as a matter of interest, how much would it cost to implement a full 802.11b network with router for only 2 computers, one being a laptop so PCMCIA is best for that.

I would like to know where you get all these products you guys talk about?

For your cabled betwork, you would need a internet router with a 4 port built in switch for about R400.

For the Wireless, Use a Di-604 wireless router for about R480+- then a wireless PCI card for R350+- and a PCMCIA for about R375 or so. Please feel free to email me, and I will give you the purchasing details.
