I read on one of these post that Freeek is on the wireless online (wo) package in cape town.

can u plz tell us more about it since i cant get a hold of them through email and there is no telephone number on the site to dial.

does it burst, is it shareable on a home lan, what type of equipment do they give u etc.

if u can supply me with a number i can phone them myself, but thusfar its been a battle getting hold of them and at least two more months waiting for sentech aint my idea of a good time.[:(]

I can say this tho! WOW!!! im on the 128k home package. Dl's are constant at abt 15.2k. At night when downloading from my than one stream, kazaa, flashget and bit torrent. I get about 20+k.

The Best Part Is that game pings are really good locally(29 to saix cs server). I Don't really know any over seas servers. I played warcraft on useast and it was like playing like my 56k on reason. This was pretty good for me.

i don't know how to share it on a home lan without a router. Equipment: Antenae + Wireless Bridge + POE BOX

Isn't what these guys offer illegal? I mean they're using 2.4Ghz 802.11 networks...and it crosses roads etc, so surely by what I've gathered about the ICASA ruling on this stuff its outlawed...

Am I missing something?

Yes, these companies are indeed still operating illegally, as they do not hold the type of license that Sentech holds.

If it aint Sentech, or resold for Sentech, then it's illegal. Just because Sentech can now roll out wireless Internet does not mean anyone else can.
 
If I were in Sentech's shoes, I would move to get the illegal's closed [}:)] - I mean its not fair to have to compete with guys that haven't paid for a license...
Now if the law was changed and wifi were deregulated...[8D]

I am sure Sentech will have them closed down. I for one would not sign up with them, its too risky.

I used to be on something similar in JHB... but yeah, they were a bunch of losers... was R450 a month, but they watched what u were doing and didn't allow downloads...

Dude there's a difference between being anti-competitive and upholding the law. Sentech should move to get these ILLEGAL operators closed, since they are trading for free in a space that Sentech had to pay large license fees for. And like I also said, if the law was changed to legalise WiFi networks (which is what these little operators are using), then I'm all for it.

Hmmm.[:o)]....Wireless but still bound to one site!? Or should I add Line of Site. 1400 rand to start of with + 399 PM for 64 connction.

IMHO that is not remotly competitive to sentech MyWireless offer!!!

even ADSL telkom checks better than that... granted 2 year contract but 400 bob for telephone line + ADSL dont know what instalation costs are 4 adsl ... + 200 for internet conn...+ + + **** telkom does add up hay ...
but me thinking its getting rather interesting with all diferent offers now days .... ill hide in the bush and wait .. all those offers are good but nothing is really MUSTHAVE right this moment.. it will get better.. SA will be good place only when no cap ADSL is 350PM inclusive of all cossts... + u get to choose if one should take delivery NOW or next day,........ ups am i dreaming now.. well this is drool sliding down my cheek i must off been ... [:I]
 
at least these guys know how to deal with treehuggers.....

i see telkom bakkies all over our neighbourhood l8ly after about two weeks of terrible dialup. i cant help but wonder if the recent quarter page ads in Die Burger for ADSL dont have anything to do with it.

ALL I KNOW IS THAT I NEED BETTER INTERNET SOON OR IM GONNA PHREAKIN [xx(]

btw - sentech aint losing money in the cape cause of these small times comps, its because they're not here yet! [V]

Hi,

At this point I wish to remain anonymous, but I would like to share some of my thoughts.

With regards to Sentech, this is my understanding.
1. It is still controlled by the government. It was a fully government owned company until recently, and they have sold a portion of the company, and the government owns the rest.
2. They were issued with a multimedia license, but to date the definition of multimedia has not been defined, and therefore does not include internet service provisions. This is only to be addressed later on this year.
3. Companies such as Megawan, WISP and Wireless Online have been trying in vain to provide a resonable 24/7 internet connection long before Telkom had spoken about ADSL, nevermind MyWireless. Surely, although illegal, these people deserve some credit for effort and bravery, and a step in the right direction for communications in South Africa.

When MyWireless do launch in Cape Town, the signals will have very little effect on the Wireless Online as they are using different frequencies. One is 2.4ghz and the other 2.6ghz if I am not mistaken.

When is this country going to get some freedom of communication? I mean, they have now banned Skype which is not dis-similar to MSN (voice)????????????????
 
They have not banned Skype! They are trying, the hearings havent even begun as far as I know.

Multimedia == any media. This does include internet service provisions.

Also, technicaly if Telkom will not provide a service, anyone can assume the right to provide it. Does 3G not apply there?

My guess is given MyWireless, Telkom want VoIP properly banned because people will be able to make "phone calls" via MyWireless instead of using the Telkom PSTN (*COUGH*IE BEING RIPPED THE **** OFF*COUGH*)

In CT, MyWireless will not "interfere" with 802.11 (Wireless Online). Its in the same unlicensed band but uses different technolgies (ie. modulation schemes). MyWi is 3G while WiFi(for example) is an 802.11 application.

I want to know how wo.co.za can operate (since they are illegal) and seemingly quite successfully carry on operating. Basically they are sharing their dedicated links / leased line(s) via WLAN which is contradictory to the WLAN rules / laws. I think its fine while there is no Sentech but when Sentech gets to CT and WO gets to Gauteng then there will be a problem.

Other than low pings, what is the point of WO type access. The have a 6 month contract which is a bit strange considering they can be shut down anytime. Also R999 to signup.. thats a little heavy. I say stick with Sentech. Or get ISDN for gaming. OR both [:p]
 
i say yes to wireless online (when they come test my house one day) and screw all others who are too lame to get things going.

..can't wait to chuck my 56k and stuff this piece of sheeeaat telkom line thats never reliable. [^]
 
Yip. YOU pay R500 + R1000 + R400 a month (6 month contract) and then they get closed down in month 3,4,5,6 say. Shame.. at least you can still use their "modem" (a normal WLAN card) but it can only do 2Mbps so it wont be of *much* use..
