Hi all,
I am hoping somebody can help me after searching this forum in vain.
I have a Marconi Premium Combo router from Telkom connected to an ADSL line. There is a desktop PC that connects via cable and that works fine, internet access, port forwarding etc etc is all dandy.
Now i have two laptops that i want to connect wirelessly to the router, one is running XP Pro with a 802.11b speed wireless card (which only supports WEP i think) and the other is running Vista Ultimate with a 802.11a/b/g wireless card (and which supports more advanced encryptions)
Now i can connect each laptop via cables to the router and get 'net access and stuff and all is ok. But I can't seem to connect wirelessly with either.
These are the things that i have tried:
set to transmit only at 11 Mbps (B only) then:
used an open connection with no authentication: get limited connectivity on Vista laptop, no 'net access. On the XP laptop, i get the same thing, i can send packets but not receive them and the signal/connection is shown to be there.
used shared key with WEP: same result.
used WPA_PSK with WPA1_TKIP and WPA1_AES: obviously no connection on the XP laptop, but still nothing on the Vista machine.
I have tried changing the speed to B or G only and the other options which are MIXED_G_WIFI (both G and B?) and MIXED_LONG (no idea!?). What do the last two mean?
Also why when I change the Wireless SSID to "Home Network" It comes up as "Home Network" for the wireless, but as "marconi" (the original name) for the wired connection?
I have also tried what was recommended in this post by tumi007: No luck!

so can anyone help me? Maybe offer a solution or tell me i'm being a dumbass and have missed something stupid?! Can I get both machines to connect at the fastest possible speed (depending on machine) using WEP encryption?

have now got the Vista machine to connect by using WPA_PSK with WPA_MIXED, and the profile set to MIXED_G_WIFI. obviously the XP machine will not work.... grr arg! stupid router!
