I have a D-Link wireless AP at one end of my house and would like to extend the range through 3 stories and about 40 meters to the other side.

What can I use to amplify or extend the range?

I used to use a Linksys wireless range extender to get wireless to the other side of my house. This past weekend I wired a cable through (it was not easy!) and installed a separate router. It works much better. If possible, run a cable and have a second wireless router on the other side.

I used the Linksys WRE54G.

And you're more than welcome to buy it off me :).

It worked fine for a number of years. But, keep in mind, with wireless range extenders, you have to use WDS, and that comes with a performance hit. Also you still have to rely on the signal quality between the range extender and the AP.

ponder mentioned poynting and scoop above - it's also possible to get a better aerial from one of these companies and increase the signal strength from your current AP - I thought about doing this too, but for me it just raised too many questions. Like what sort of connector is it? And does the router push out enough power to support a bigger range?
