Hi - I am a non-IT person trying to set up a home wireless network. The signal in my 2nd story bedroom (router is on ground floor) is weak and I would welcome recommendations regarding which repeaters and boosters antennas can be recommended, and where to buy it from. Alternatively, a recommendation of a firm who I can approach for assistence?

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum

The omni-directional antennas will broadcast the signal in a horizontal plane, so you won't get a strong signal on another story of the building in any way.

I would suggest that you get a wireless access point that you connect to your existing router via a LAN cable.
If there is a certain point on the 2nd-floor that has a good signal strength, then you can place a wireless repeater there, what won't require any LAN cables to be connected to your router on the ground floor.

Uniterm Direct has a whole range of wireless devices, including repeaters. You can often find Uniterm Direct's products cheaper on Bid-or-Buy (which includes VAT), than on their own website (which excludes VAT).

get an access point that can be placed in repeater mode... thus... in future you can still use it as a normal wifi router.

Thank you - what make and model, and where to buy?

Hi - thanks for the advice. What make and model of ap can you recommend? How difficult is this to install?

Regards

Found your thread because of Uniterm Direct. I was actually looking for some decent repeaters but wasn't too sure which one had the better reputation? Maybe someone here knows?

I don't want to overspend on any model and I'm not really that familiar with how to set them up either so you will have to sort of give me a step by step.

Also, I was looking for some reviews and came across http://www.wifirepeaterreviews.com which has a lot of them but I'm still not sure which is the best. They have some good featured models for discount, and maybe those are the better buy, but maybe Uniterm has something similar?

Asus has a nice little wireless broadband router that picked up my main ADSL router from quite a distance (no cabling) and offered me 150Mbps speeds all over again. My main router is running 802.11N.

Asus RT-N10+ EZ N Wireless Router - 150Mbps router with 4 port 10/100 switch - You should be able to pick it ip for under R350.00 and it has multiple modes, so you can choose how you want to run it. If you get stuck, and you're in JHB - I'll let you have it for R325.00 as long as you collect from my supplier (Midrand)
