Wireless Router / ADSL modem problem

Trying to help out a friend and not currently "on-site".
Have 2 machines, a notebook and desktop both with XP Pro and ADSL line with Netgear router modem.
Have got ADSL working on router, also connect notebook with wireless to router to internet working 100%.
Desktop has no NIC, using a wireless USB2 stick, it obtains an IP, and can ping router and notebook, also can see shared files on notebook when Start Run ip address.
For now security is open on router.
Cannot connect to internet, cannot even connect to Router configuration page with desktop. All TCP/IP settings on auto and same as notebook.
Please help.

Make sure the desktop has got the same default gateway and DNS addresses as the laptop.

also check mac filtering ... might be the reason iinternet access is being dropped.
what security are you using on your router¿

Will check DNS address and gateway, no MAC filtering.

Found problem, guy had some spyware installed... once removed everything worked.
