Hey guys

Sorry to post this, but the guy at the MTN store is a bit clueless...

I asked about any wireless routers that are available, to which they replied all their USB modems are wireless. Tried to explain what I was talking about, but I eventually had to give up.

So, does anyone know if MTNSP offer any wireless routers on a 2GB Data Plan? If not on the plan, what is available to purchase outright, or what would you guys recommend??

Netgear is my recommendation... checkout Netgear.com or our website..

If that's too expensive Dlink has some good choices..

We've also stocked Edimax now - and it's good quality gear at good quality prices too...

EDIT: Oh you want a 3GRouter? Mmmm I'm sure Netgear have a good option - info should be there also...

Yeah, a 3G Router, and only because of one reason, on one side of my house I get amazing speeds, normally in the region of 5Mbps, but on the other nothing higher than EDGE.

I'd like to get my hands on the stuff the guy from MTN was smoking. They had one on offer in March if I'm not mistaken - Huawei B970. It's even listed two clicks away from the home page. If you want something slightly different, look at a Linksys or D-Link DIR-451. The D-Link accepts USB and PC Card-based 3G modems, as well as a DSL modem.

Actually, the DIR-451 hardware version A1 does not have a WAN port or ADSL port.

The DIR-451 hardware version A2* has a WAN port, but not an ADSL port.

* Not for sale in South Africa.

Thanks, didn't know that. The missing WAN port isn't too much of a problem, though, since I don't think the OP will be using it anytime soon.

Understand your options - make an informed decision

There are many kinds of routers. There are some for old-type 3G modems that I won't list, but here follows at least 7 types that are for USB-modems and are still relatively relevant - some are even relatively new:

a) 3G router with built-in Wireless-G
b) 3.5G router with built-in Wireless-G
c) 3.5G router with built-in Wireless-G and Dual-USB (for additional 3.5G MODEM, or network storage)
d) 3.5G/Neotel/iBurst router with built-in Wireless-G and Dual-USB (for additional POWER, or network storage)
e) ADSL/2/2+ router with built-in 3.5G router and built-in Wireless-G
f) 3.5G router with built-in 3.5G modem and built-in Wireless-G
g) 3.5G/3.75G routers with built-in Wireless-N

a) Examples: D-Link DIR-451 A1, Edimax 3G-6200Wg (Can handle HSDPA but not HSUPA)
b) Examples: D-Link DIR-451 A2
c) Examples: MikroTik 433UAH
d) Examples: Dovado UMR
e) Examples: Billion BiPAC 74xx range, Draytek(?), etc.
f) Examples: Huawei B970, GlobeSurfer II (also features analog RJ-11 port)
g) Examples: http://www.dbg.co.za/catalog/produc...d=320&osCsid=c8560c3564d94b27da60fe22dfab901d and http://www.dbg.co.za/catalog/produc...d=316&osCsid=c8560c3564d94b27da60fe22dfab901d

Tip 1: If you already have a 3G USB-modem, ignore option f.
Tip 2: In all the above examples (except option f) you should check to verify whether your modem's make & model are on the router's compatibility list before purchasing.
