And I was in the UK 2 weekends ago and it cost me 70 pounds for a pub lunch for 4 people.

Normally things are at least double what it costs here. It looks like this service is 25% of what we pay for mywireless.

Must have something to do with the catchment area. i.e. the population

hey but the modem here are form the UK anyway ( back of modem ORGIN : UK )... so why sentech ripping people off..???

Don't think so much a matter of ripping off the customer as paying the Emperor his dues etc.

The modems were purchased "apparently when the exchange rate was still pretty whack .... part of the reason.

Don't forget customs & excise duties + VAT.

Price might come down in future, but when was the last time the price on anything decreased.

I have framed the letters I have received from DSTV during thetime when the Rand was at 10-13 to the dollar .... they said they had to hike their prices as the cost of programming in $ was their biggest expense ...... did that come down ....... we are now at R 6.66 for today.[V]

Well atleast they get semi-real broadband 1mps

Fantasy is what people want, reality is what they need.

Both NZ and the UK subsidise their modems to the tune of 50% and this is possible due to other sponsors which just dont exist here.
Try emailing either for a cash price modem for yourself - oh and dont forget the R300 duty slapped on this end [:)]

Pray tell, who are these "other sponsors" ???

ProAsm is a smart guy and we already know why telecoms in SA is so expensive as has been discussed ad nauseum in other threads. Not to play down your request, I just think ProAsm is in exactly the same boat as we are as far as all of this is concerned [:)]

Its only recently that I have got involved in this bandwidth stuff and believe you me it is unbelievable what one has to pay for bandwidth and I'm talking local, Internationally you have to gasp in total shock.
Nic, when you look at why telecoms is so expensive, one can see the reason behind it, I mean their outlay was huge, but hell at least let the big players help share in that burden and not treat everyone like sheep.
If only the SNO got going before us, which they were supposed to, things would be very different now.

In my opinion, the entire service is a giant rip off.

Just isolate one small thing - R 500 activation? Activation is an awfully vague term. R 500 because we feel like it, more to the point.

Sorry, I've had a bad day...
