Hi,

I'm trying to get the best wireless out of my Linksys WAG300N. Firstly I upgraded firmware and these settings are next. What are they and when should I use them?

  • Network Mode (mixed or disable)
  • Network name (SSID)
  • Radio band (wide 40mhz channel or standard 20mhz channel)
  • Wide channel (3 through 9)
  • Standard channel (options depends on above)
  • Wireless SSID broadcast (on and off)
  • Security mode (WEP, PSK-personal, PSK2-personal, PSK-enterprise, PSK2-enterprise, RADIUS, disabled)
  • Wireless MAC filter (prevent/permit)
  • AP Isolation (enabled, disabled)
  • Authentication type (auto, open system, shared key)
  • Basic rate (default, 1-2mbps, all)
  • Transmission rate (auto, 6 - 56mbps)
  • N Transmission rate (auto, 13.5 - 270mbps)
  • CTS Protection mode (disabled, auto)
  • Beacon interval (20-1000)
  • DTIM Interval (1-255)
  • Fragmentation threshold (256-2346)
  • RTS threshold (256-2346)

oooh wireless N thats sexy, have you checked to see if its open source and compatible with OpenWRT or similar at all? they are alont nicer to configure than the stock configs.

Er. Yes. Cept I have no idea what you're talking about ;)

I've actually had it for near on a year, but I've never seen a card or device that supports it

Depends entirely on what you're wanting out of it.
Security? Speed?
How many devices are connecting to it? are they all N cards? etc.

daffs! Sorry for the delayed reply ... not in for security at all ; purely speed & range. In fact, currently its totally unsecured. I have only one device connected - a wireless B/G media streamer. I know I could do adhoc mode, but I can't seem to find the setting.

Also the AP is upstairs and the streamer is downstairs ... hence I'm looking for best signal

I've learned if you want to get the best signal try moving your router to a more central point of the house that helps.

:confused:Also with the settings just read through your manual a bit they tell you everything there as well.

Manual doesn't really explain much about the setting ; more about the actual installation :/
btw Think the height of the unit makes a difference? I can have it either on my computer desk or the shelf above ... about a metre from the roof.

The only issue that you might need to change here, is that your Streamer is only 802.11g capable, and your AP is 802.11N (pre-N).
Try changing channels around. And position the AP and Stream in the open. (ie: not under the desk, or behind anything)

The thing with wireless channels is that I'm used to the normal 1-11 ... with a preferred channel 1,6 or 11. I've used a few other wireless cards and that's how they all work. This AP has the following settings regarding channel and I'm not even sure what they mean:

  • Radio band (wide 40mhz channel or standard 20mhz channel)
  • Wide channel (3 through 9)
  • Standard channel (options depends on above)
These are the options for standard channel that I get when selecting various wide channels:

  • wide channel 3 ; standard 1 or 5
  • wide channel 4 ; standard 2 or 6
  • wide channel 5 ; standard 3 or 7
  • wide channel 6 ; standard 4 or 8
  • wide channel 7 ; standard 5 or 9
  • wide channel 8 ; standard 6 or 10
  • wide channel 9 ; standard 7 or 11
I can select standard 20mhz channel and in that case the 'wide channel' is greyed out leaving standard channel 1-13. I was told that 'wide channel' would increase the performance of even 'g' devices. Right? Wrong? Leaqve wide channel? Grey it out?

I've heard 13 is illegal in SA - what is the worst if I select it?
