Overall, these wireless microphones are not a ‘must have’. Rather, their appeal will lie with fans of the series, more than anyone else.
Fans of the SingStar range of games will no longer have to worry about all those annoying wires, thanks to the latest addition to the franchise’s hardware stable. The Wireless SingStar Microphones are finally available, freeing the player up for more of those partypumping and ‘deliciously’ embarrassing performances that have made these games so very popular.
Released just in time for the new SingStar: Queen, these microphones are sturdily built and very reliable. The solid construction means that they will be able to withstand more than a few knocks, and the exclusion of wires means that the family dog will no longer accidentally unplug players mid-performance (although this might be something of a mercy at times).
Each microphone is powered by two AA batteries, which deliver a surprisingly long power supply. Players won’t be cut off ‘mid-stream’, and it won’t be necessary to store a pile of batteries near the PlayStation.
The signal from the microphones is received via a USB unit that plugs into any available port on the console. This is the only real weakness of these devices: the signal from the microphones to the receiver might be subject to certain kinds of interference. This is a fairly common problem with most kinds of wireless devices… It only becomes obvious in this case because of the fact that these are audio units.
A massive plus for those who are looking at getting these babies is that they are compatible with both the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 consoles. This handy bit of forward thinking means that anyone who plays SingStar, regardless of platform, can make use of them and, because they are microphones and only really affect the games in terms of audio input, they are compatible with all the SingStar titles.
Naturally, these are intended for fans of the game, and those who do not get hold of them bundled with software might see them as a bit of a grudge purchase (unless they are insanely enthusiastic about the franchise). But getting them as part of the SingStar: Queen bundle is a pretty decent bargain. Overall, these wireless microphones are not a ‘must have’. Rather, their appeal will lie with fans of the series, more than anyone else. Newcomers will have little option in getting them, as they will replace the wired devices without a doubt. Still, that’s not a bad thing – these are very well put together, and they deliver a sterling performance.
