Hi guys,

So I want to start teaching myself penetration testing/ethical hacking and want to buy a wireless USB adapter to use with Kali. I understand the adapter needs to support monitoring mode as well as packet injection. I've found this TP-Link adapter: http://www.takealot.com/tp-link-150mbps-high-power-wireless-usb-adapter/PLID32579759 but can't find any info on the chipset it uses or whether or not it supports packet injection. Does anyone have any information/advice?

If that adapter is suitable, I figured I'd remove the antenna and replace it with this one: http://www.takealot.com/9-5dbi-omni-turbo-tenna-2-4ghz-wifi-antenna-with-rp-sma/PLID41141300

Thanks in advance for the advice :)

No offence but if you can't figure that out for yourself I don't see you having a fun time, also the answer is Ralink RT3070 which is one of the most commonly used chipsets used with Kali and will work.

None taken... I did say I am going to start learning - not that I have started :o

Great, didn't want to seem mean spirited, the adapter you linked to will work 100%

Thanks and the 9.5dBi antenna? Or is that not entirely necessary to start out with?

I'm assuming you want the antenna to boost your range, in that case you will actually find that it won't really increase the range it will increase the signal strength within your range.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up, I thought it would increase the range of the wifi adapter...
Did you study network security or self taught?

It probably will increase the range, but not in the way you think it will.

Most of the things I know I know because I'm a I.T enthusiast (nerd) but I don't know any hacking stuff, just some networking in general.

Okay thanks :)

Have just ordered the TP-Link from Takealot (had R200 voucher from doing The Colour Run :D)
Hope I get the hang of things quickly...

Hope the TP-Link works out for you.

I have these, but they don't work, as they don't support promiscuous mode. They are a few years old, so maybe the newer versions do.

Yours don't work because they have a Atheros chipset, know to be useless with driver support, especially on Linux.
