Netgear Wireless very slow

i have a netgear DG834GT router and a netgear WG311T pci card on my computer which is only about 10m-15m away from the router, with a single wall inbetween them.

signal ranges from 69% all the way to 94% at times, without moving any components. thats problem number 1 because when the signal drops below ~80% i dont get my full line speed when downloading something. dont get 400kb/s, get under 100kb/s !

second problem, copying files to another computer connected to router directly, is extreeeemely slow (even when signal is excellent)...speed is always under 1mb/s, drops as low as 300kb/s

any ideas how to get better speeds?

If the router is connected via usb then yes it will be slow though if it is via rj then i have no clue why so slow.

I use cable and wireless at home for 15 pc's and a few laptops and cable is always faster even if the 2 machines are next to each other and right next to the router (go figure)

Sorry a bit off topic but what's your home like with 15 pc's? Mini internet cafe?

Change the wireless channel the ap is using, try 1 ; 6 ; 11

Wait for true N to come out. :)

Lapa is an office with 8 pc's, my room/office has 2, brothers office has 2 with 2 laptops, sisters room 1 laptop, 1 server pc in a friends room and dining room 2 laptops. Iburst covers the lapa and adsl for the rest of the house.

Also have 4 machines lying around at the moment which i am working on.

Big house so no space issues :)

router connected to other computer through ethernet cable not usb

wireless channel is 6 also...should i try 1 & 11 stil? i dont think there are many wireless networks in my neighbourhood

Are you using windows wireless manager to manage the connection or the software supplied with the wireless card? And change the channel to 11, 12 or 13.

Windows.

What difference should the channel make? I will try it later when I get home.

I find I get a more stable connection and better signal strength with the wireless card suppliers software.

The lower channels can be subjected to interference from other household devices, I've always used the upper 3 and have had no issues.

Download netstumbler and check whats cooking on the different channels. I managed to extend the range on my router quite a bit by moving to a different channel.

i bought a D-link 7dbi omni directional antenna (with the 1.5m extension which causes 2dbi loss) for R282...my signal is now +90% all the time, reaches 100% at times lol, and copying files on the network now goes at 2000-2500kb/s.

am using windows not netgear software, and using yahoo widget to monitor the % of the signal. The antenna is placed further away than the router used to be from items that may have interfered such as cordless phone, cordless keyboard and mouse.

Speed Before antenna

So what was your connection speed before you invested in the antenna?

signal used to reach max 85%, but used to drop as low as 65% at times for some reason, prob due to interference etc. copying files over network would go at +- 600kb/s

I am not sure if it's a distance problem. I have had my laptop right by the router, and it was still slow, there was no increase in speed. Very strange.

I upgraded the router to latest software (I thought it was, but obviously I missed something).

Then, confirmed the wireless card on the laptop could do 11m and 54. So, downloaded the Intel wireless card driver and software, and installed it on laptop.

Then I set the router to only work on G (54m).

now the laptop registers a much higher signal strength, and actually connect at 54m, where as before it would sometimes connect at 1m!!

I managed to stream a full movie from my laptop wirelessly to my Xbox, with absolutely no problem.
