Wisdom teeth removal.

I know there are old threads about this - thought I'd start a new one.

Who has recently had their wisdoms out - what did it cost - where was it done?

Do not go to hospital to get it removed. Much cheaper and less swelling afterwards in the chair. Be a man...
 
It depends whether they are recessed or visible.
My dentist pulled one the quick way.... was busy, then quickly injected me and pushed my head into the chair and pulled. It's the easy way. Think it cost me like R200 on top of my normal checkup.
If it's recessed it's better to operate. Some people get swelling and some don't.

Depends though. My SO has to have hers removed in the hospital - apparently they are too far out to have them pulled in the chair. Also, mine had to be taken out in hospital as well, as there were additional complications.

Would be interesting to hear about costs though - we were quoted somewhere around 13000 for her extraction (non-medical aid though). I had mine taken out a few years ago so can't remember what it was back then, and wouldn't be applicable now though.

Yeah ponder - but inflation being what it is - the more recent the information the better - :)
 
I paid R14 000 in Aug this yr (medical aid) for my wisdom teeth to be taken out in hospital. No sleepover.
 
Hi There, you shouldn't compare yourself to other people when it comes to wisdom teeth removal. It all depends on what age you are, the location and classification of the teeth. Yes it's true that some teeth can be removed under local anaesthetic in the chair, but these are usually more straight-forward extractions. If the teeth are deeply impacted, general anaesthesia is usually a better option. Post operative swelling also differs from person to person and on how deeply the teeth were impacted. Costs involved are- usually associated with paying the surgeon, paying the anaethetist, and paying for theatre time. Anaethetist can be +/- R2000, Surgeon +/- R5000 (depending on how many teeth need to be removed.) And theatre costs vary considerably from place to place.
 
If the medical aid is willing to foot the bill, go to hospital. Dont take chances with your health. My collegue thought he was saving money & went to a dentist. Got the wisdom removed in the dentist's room & got an infection afterwards. Cost him more money treating the infection (when he could have just paid the R500 co-payment) and gone to a proper hospital.
 
I have no medical aid and just went for a quote for removal of all 4 in the chair, total came to R6190. I supposed it would have been much more had i opted to go to hospital for this procedure. 2 of them need to be cut, removed and stitched up while the other 2 are straight forward extractions.

If you have medical aid it shouldn't cost you anything...

I know too many people with infections after going to a dentist that I certainly won't recommend it to anyone, but then every situation is unique.

Personally it took only about three days out of hospital before I was up and about and running around hardly the drama people make it.
 
I played golf with a fella who had all 4 of his wisdoms removed in the chair in the morning. At lunch time he was playing golf.

I only asked him over lunch at halfway if he was okay. He had been buckled over most of the time in the golf cart when he was not playing. Said he was quite sore, but not enough not to play golf, have a pie and gravy and a beer at the halfway house.
 
Jesus Christ. That much for removing a few teeth? I'm due to have mine removed soon (I only have wisdom teeth on the bottom, none on top) and I really hope I'm not going to be charged that much.
 
Dental surgeon did mine in the chair for just over R4k, if I remember correctly. Not the nicest experience to be awake while they are doing it but much cheaper than going to hospital. I had almost no swelling at all and the pain afterwards really wasn't bad.
 
I had two wisdoms removed on my lower jaw, but at very separate times. Both done in the dentists chair. The first time I think it cost me about R500. Was a fairly simple extraction. The second one was a bit more complicated and required an xray and stitches. Set me back about R1250 about a week ago. All covered by medical aid.

My medical aid didn't cover mine anyway... If they can just be pulled, I think its around R400 a tooth but if they need to cut its quite a bit more. Try and do it at a dentist instead of a day clinic and the cost shouldn't be too terrible.
