Hi all, any guidance will be appreciated.

I need a good, easy to support firewall solution for a small WISP. I've been told Suse10 is the way to go, any advise on hardware etc? I have an xtra machine, P3, 1Gb Ram, IDE drives. What about redundancy?

Anyone setup load balancing with Mikrotik, ie 2 x 512 dsl lines?

Thanks!

thanks for the reply!

what if i need to suddenly add more available bandwidth, ie my single 512 line is not sufficient, and i'd like to add another without getting a second uncapped account? I've heard that this is possible.

Thanks in advance...

As usual. If you're asking these kinds of questions, do you really think you're in a position to be offering a service to customers that are paying you money?

If you dont know what you're doing, dont do it.

you cant setup load balancing if you dont have control of the other end of the link. the closest you'll get is route balancing.

and yes, as far as routing software goes, mikrotik is up there with the big guns

Okay okay..
Yes its possible.

But I'm not going to give you step by step instructions, because you'll never learn that way.

1) Set up default routes, with the same distance/weight (Equal Cost Multi Path... load balancing per flow)
2) Masquerade all the traffic going out each interface
3) Make sure traffic coming in replies via the same interface it was recieved (hint: multiple routing tables)

I suggest you take some sort of basic TCP/IP course which includes routing.

thanks for everyone's advice. i suppose daffy if i were charging people and not setting up something private between myself and a 4 mates, then yes, maybe it would be a good idea to know what i'm doing. since we're just messing around (the best way to learn as far as i know) I don't think you need to worry too much. but then again, there was no way for you to know this, as my first post may have been a tad deceptive. be that as it may, i will still look into your advice, which is, as always on this forum, much appreciated.

See.. I have no problem with that :)

Come ask the Jawug guys.. they've all been mucking around with Mikrotik quite nicely trying to figure things out.

Mikrotik

Hi,
Mikrotik is a very good alternative to a other very expensive solutions. And, if you are just setting up a system for 4 ou 5 people the easy way to do it is to create mangle rules for each user marking each person's packets, then assign diferent interfaces for each one of the marked packets. In this way, you can, for example, use 2 users on one of the 512kb/s line, and two on another. Why messing up? There are other ways to do it, ofcourse, but i think this would be easier. Just use queues without any limits if u dont want to limit the people using the system, otherwise, u can limit each one to 256kb/s using the queue facility within Mikrotik. This is an excelent RouterOS.
Need more info, pm me.
cheers,
AS

Does Mikrotik have a cost?? Can i download it for free??

I'm in the same shoes as riggs! me and 4 peeps want 2 share a connection but i'm scarred that the 1 guy is going to download all day. All i want to do is give every1 like a 3 gig cap from a 15GB cap limit 1024 line.

Any suggestions??? Thanks

You can download, and install it for free.
You can then use it for 24-hours before the config resets.

There is a licensing structure, which is explained nicely on the mikrotik website.
You're looking at about R500 for a Level 5 License.
