Wisp's list

well currently im having serious doubts if i should go with them seeing as how it seems to be a four man op.

Justin the guy at support tells me there aren't any plans to roll out in bellville area that im staying at.

Dietmar seems non plussed and doesn't seem willing to do a site survey. After some wrangling he agreed to do a survey on Monday but he never showed.

Richard seemed quite helpful and tried to arrange the whole thing but cause they didnt come on monday i dont have access to the roof until a later date.

Andre the guy who seems to be the supply guy couldnt after a day tell richard if there was any stock on their equip

So in your opinion is this company gonna work? am i gonna get my speeds?

If i consider the feedback that i've seen regarding a friends wireless online setup on their 64k one it would seem that his speeds are consistent. Though their website is not up to date they advertise a storage and wireless online network where everyone can connect to one another but in reality there is no Centralised server( though apparently there are plans for one) and for wan gaming there is no pc's listed in his network places so playing games against each other seems a little bit hard if you cant even see the other players.

also if you look at their prices it seems that you only get two options 64k or 128k with varying degrees of shaping. but if you consider i have to pay 999 bucks for a 128k unlimited connection. damn that's a harsh price. for that price i can get a sentech modem, antenna and a 256(apparently) connection with supposedly no port shaping. hmmmmmmmmmm...

the only reason that im looking now at wireless online still is cause i cant get sentech or the other guys here at my place. and i definetly cant afford to fork out the ridiculous prices for adsl

Agreed, I think this definitely qualifies as a sticky.

Well i finally had my wireless online installed yesterday running on the @work package 128k no speed slowdowns. One point in negative of wo is the no p2p during 0700-2400. But from the pings i've been getting
to mweb my average is about 45ms
to google.com is about 400
and to eve-online the pings were running at a stead 360 (in my experience for an international server to give me that is just amazing)
so all and all im quite happy at the mo with them.
if ure thinking bout wireless online just remember to keep hammering the guys for your installation. mine was scheduled for 1200 and they only rocked up 2 and a half hours later.

imo definetly a good service once u get it running.

Hmmm they don't cover my area, lazy crackers. And anyone who tried to pitch up late would recieve a verbal abusing they would never forget.

are the latest addition to the WISP providers. They have listed their
nodes at www.nodedb.com
I would love to know from them how they will block Icasa from confiscating their stuf.
I will give Andries a ring tomorrow.

Im sure i saw a dlink in there when they installed it.
though they buy from Miro if im not wrong and miro is sanoa

Hi guys,

Double PS
as for late installation, ive never known an installer or techy, anything to do with computers to be on time [:(!] , its just one of thoughs things...

armitage "One point in negative of wo is the no p2p during 0700-2400."
its 2AM to 7 AM 5 hours of ptp.

as far as i know you get your full speed and maby a boosted rate because of the fact that its early hours and the network is reasonably empty of traffic...[;)]

Oh and armitage, dont comment on where people get their stock or who from unless you know 100% for sure, especially on a public forum where you stand the chance to make a company look good or bad, also uninet slow thier ptp to 1.1k ? that doesnt sound right... i could be wrong though [?]
But guys im sure the other wireless isp's have some bad points why are you all aiming at wo and uninet [?]

Mullet this is an open forum. I have all the right in the world to speculate on a company and a product if i want to and as a matter of fact i will do just that. If a company provides me with bad service or raises my eyebrows on certain topics i will speak out about it.

The stuff i said bout wo stays.
regarding the support times those times were quoted by a lady answering wo's phones(not even the same comp) on a sunday afternoon when i was getting no access for bout 12 hours.
Yes most wisp's dont have a 24/7 call helpdesk but some of them provide you with a cell number at least to phone if something happens after hours.
hmmm.. just checked their site again they now have a new hotline which ill update.

All in all my service with wo has been exactly what i paid for.....almost. except for some latency issues now and again the service runs smooth. when p2p works i get my full 16k's even sometimes a whopping 17k's.

I stated the 2450 price for uninet cause u have to pay that immediately on signing up which is a defenitive detractor from their service.

Just cause everyone is used to having bad service from companies is za does not make it any less excusable. if i have to take off from work to come and oversee an installation at my house and they dont rock up thats unexceptable for me.
Business is business u give ure word for an appointment and u keep it. All the companies that i frequent workk on this premise also.

Proud South african rip offs.

im on adsl now. I was on WO then Uninet now adsl. adsl is by far greater than them both. but adsl does not fufill my downloading needs. very sad. 3gig *** but at least I can game and have no down time

Kensington/bez valley e.t.c... wisp

Hi,

I'm located in Kensington JHB overlooking bez valley/obs and cyrildene, was wondering if there are any small wisps opperating that I can connect to via line of sight access using an aerial?

I'm access range might even be larger.

Willing to pay between R300 to R400 per month upfront, don't mind capped access.

Pop me a mail via this site.

There are a few, but I wouldn't recommend any of them.
Why not join JAWUG?
Our core network covers the bruma valley. We may not be able to offer you internet access, but I'm sure you'll learn alot by joining.

Snowball

Hi

I'm using a new WISP in Stellenbosch, though they claim to have towers in Strand and Somerset West too (I could be wrong) called Snowball effect (www.snowball.co.za), though their website does not even mention WISP yet. I found out about them from a friend, and they seemed somewhat surprised that I knew of their WISP service. They are actually an established ISP, network management and software development house, so their basic IP infrastructure seems to be sorted.

Contact: Eugene or Hildegard, (021)-8802228

Installation: Had to wait 2 days, but they came at the appointed time, and had a very can-do attitude. I dealed with Hildegard

Cost: 64k guaranteed, 512k burstable, NAT (i.e. no real IP):
R399/PM
R1999 Installation, though you own the equipment. They seemed to install a Senao unit. No survey charge.

They also seem to have a 64k business package with real IP for R800/PM

Speeds: Well, I've only been using from Friday to Saturday evening, so no business hours rush. So far I'm impressed, been getting a lot more than 64k (most downloads avarage about 25 kbyte/s). Can't say about P2P, but a NATed IP won't be helping you either.

Have had good success with skype, including conference calls. And the absurd contigency of calling skyping my friend connected by Vodacom 3G, and then calculating how, even when he starts paying per MB, it's still significantly cheaper than using a landline! And also realising, that since both he and I were NATed, our conversation was being routed overseas. -1 for penny-pinching ISPs. I especially can't understand why Vodacom has to NAT you, they charge enough! Other interesting fact, is that using Skypeout to SA is no more expensive than making a local call during business hours. I don't think I'm getting a landline at all.

Cheers
Neilen

brick, AFAIK WISPs are still illegal due to this dumb signal crossing public boundaries regulation, so I'm sure they were surprised to find you knew about them - they probably wanted to keep it that way. The fact that they are charging for their services probably means that Telkomonopoly will get onto Poison Ivy & get her to get ICASA to shut them down.

At a guess anyways.

IC,

Yeah, guess so, though the other WISPS don't seem to be that shy (cf uninet, wireless and other's websites). They did actually briefly have an add up. It seems to me the main reason they were surprised is that they haven't officially launched it yet. Well, let's see what happens. Worst possible event they stop the WISP service, and then I paid a little too much for some wifi equipment. BTW, what do these things cost? They claimed the SENAO unit costs around R1000. Does that sound right?
