ok - pretty horrible, But lest the Europeans amongst us forget to soon - we were still doing this a couple of centuries ago...

And, the Middle East is just as barbaric today.

Not to say it is right - just not really fair to make it a race thing.

It's not a race thing. It's a cultural thing. Mine moved past this sort of barbarism centuries ago. Why hasn't theirs? Teachers, ffs! Seems some people just don't like others who know more than they do.

First off, I don't want to turn this into a hot debate :p - but, am in the mood for playing the other side of the fence.

200 years is not a long time - 50 000 years ago we were human, 10 000 years ago we were building pyramids, and 500 years ago, the Americas had only just been discovered (except of course for the people already living there).

"Many of the pupils started crying for no apparent reason. Some claimed they wanted meat during their crying," the captain explained.

The symptoms of being bewitched. Good to know.

In the 500 years since the americas were discovered, the peoples thereof have mostly settled down and try not to set each other alight. Much. Apart from brazil. ;)

Africa's been colonised much longer, and yet we've still got muti killings, tribal warfare, child rape and a whole gamut of other nastiness... including, would you believe it, witch hunts.

You really want to make that comparison?

Actually: 1492 vs 1652 for South Africa.

You're going to compare the date of landing on a continent to a country? Africa has been host to european colonies since the time of the roman empire. Central and north africa isn't much better off than SA, culturally speaking. In a lot of places, worse.

I have to compare in that way. Prior to this century (and the last few decades of the last), it took a long time for information to spread across a continent.

As to the Regions of Africa, the OP was specifically regarding South Africa.

So, given 160 years or so, SA should be just as civilised as the New World? Problem is, Africa is resistant to different cultures. Information still spreads slowly, and there's always the residue of old savagery which occasionally comes to light. This is one of those moments.

Africa is a self-centered continent which closes its eyes to progress in the name of it's all-important cultural roots. Gods, it makes me sick.

All cultures are resistant to change.
Try and get the Americans to drop their idiotic WASP mentatility and fully accept other religions - or atheism. "Place your hand on the bible and repeat after me..." being my favourite pet hate.
