Wits introduces philanthropy degree

Johannesburg – Wits has broken new ground with the launch of a qualification in philanthropy and fundraising, a first of its kind in Africa.

The postgraduate diploma in management in the field of African philanthropy and resource mobilisation will be offered by the Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment (Capsi) at Wits Business School.

The university said the launch of the qualification follows years of planning and collaboration with Inyathelo: the South African Institute for Advancement to professionalise this sector with the support of the organisation’s funders and partners.

AFAIK generally philanthropists make a difference by donating money... Something most students/graduates are very short of.

A post graduate degree in being African? A classroom that teaches the vaunted spirit of Ubuntu - that sage African philosophy underpinning our Constitution!?!?

From my vantage point - it's a croc of absolute rubbish.

A degree in African brotherly exploitation, is probably better suited and a desirable degree.

If you need to complete a degree to become a philanthropist then philanthropy might not be for you

This article is headlined 'degree' but the body calls it a diploma (requiring a bachelor's degree to qualify) *confused*

Many of the clients my company has operate in the donor space, funded by U.S. Govt money (ie american taxes). Another of our partners does similar sorts of diplomas/certificates (haven't done the courses myself, so can't be sure).

In theory , if you ignore all the fluff, this is good for those that work for/with NGO's and international/local (mostly international, lets be honest) funders. It's actually a cut throat sector and anything that sets you apart from the competition is a good thing.

They really should have included some sort of financial module. NGOs are easily #1 when it comes to shockingly bad financial management. Not necessarily fraudulent but just shockingly incompetent to the point where it made me rethink donating in general.

Nobody seemed to care either. Money from the major overseas donors flows in & gets treated exactly like taxpayer money...magic money tree style.
