Hi All,

Any software developers been through the Wits JCSE CPD programme.

Any comments on the value gained?

I've been wanting to do it but not sure I can keep up (will power) with the studies at this time.

Guy I worked with did it. Went on to do his mastersbstraight after.

I know this thread is quite old. Disclaimer: I lecture one of the modules of the CPD course (7045). I'd be happy to discuss the programme with you further if you want. joshua [at] jcse [dot] org [dot] za

Thanks Josh,

I enrolled in 2017 and will finish this year.

Mixed feelings to be honest, so if anyone is planning to do the programme, feel free to get in touch.

I found some curriculum info. Honestly, I shudder to think that people are doing MSc/MEng degrees with just this as a prerequisite. These "masters" degrees would have to barely above an IT certificate. I think that doing a BSc from scratch would be far better from an education perspective.

No longer. You will now need to do a post-graduate diploma first and then enroll for an MSc. M.Eng scrapped.

Take a look at some of the best MSc programmes globally, the pre-requisites/ content may surprise you. They are not trying to get the same information across as a BSc/Bcom

He is right about the curriculum of the CPD itself though. Based on a quick read of that, it would be a complete waste of my time. Most of that I covered by doing information systems and computer science at university.

I somewhat agree; so after completing some of the programme it is my opinion that it is good for working professionals who have never had the opportunity of studying at university but I would be hard-pressed to recommend it to honours graduates.

The content is slightly different to undergraduate though and you will get out what you put in. Another plus is that the students are far more mature - most are the equivalent of dev team leads at well established companies.

I interview people from the best MEng, MSc and PhD programmes just about every week, and they have absolutely covered everything in a BEng or BSc as undergraduates, as well as much more advanced material in their masters degrees (that requires their undergraduate skills as a foundation).

Just to be clear on my point, I think the coursework is useful and valuable, but calling it (the following degree) an MSc or MEng is extremely misleading and somewhat unfair to those who have put in the effort to obtain those degrees the hard way.

The degree after is identical; just the route to get there is different. But we can just agree to disagree - remember that most candidates have extensive experience and may qualify for RPL.

I believe that an MSc or MEng that can "typically" be done without a BSc or BEng is bogus regardless of the route. I support RPL, but believe that it should be tested via the same exams written by undergraduates.
