Johannesburg - Students at the University of the Witwatersrand were set to protest on Wednesday against a visit by South African-born Israeli soldier, David Benjamin.

And once again they play the race card.

Students allege that on the day of the talk, a private security firm took control of the gates at the university and barred many students, mostly black, from entering.

So White/non-Black students were also barred?

"They were disallowing black students onto campus for the most part... the control of campus gates were taken over by a private security company who were mostly 17- to 25-year-old young white men," said student, Natasha Vally.

So White/non-Black students were also barred?

Do these students not understand the majority concept? If they majority of the protesters are Black then majority of those denied into the campus will be... yes, you guessed it, Black!

I worry about the level of tertiary education in this country. The security company was merely denying protesters access to their employer. The big problem is that the security company was White, and I'm probably guessing Jewish/Israeli (not that many Black Jews in case you hadn't noticed).

Unfortunately it has become so common place that the moment anyone plays the race card these days you loose all respect for their cause.

EDIT: In fact their comments have completely detracted from the reason they were protesting and made it all about them. Typical.

This is not unfortunate.

I appreciate knowing what kind of person I'm dealing with. Race card= no respect and I can go about my business without wasting my time.

Well unfortunate because I have no doubt that racial bias is prevalent in some situations and well justified (think Black Journalists Forum) and when a situation occurs that is completely valid it looses all credibility because "they're playing the race card".

A bit of crying wolf, I'm afraid. One day the wolf might actually pitch up!

These people at wits want any excuse to riot and march... its a waste of time, and i think the varsity should take a stand... I was there for four years, and twice classes were cancelled for a week cos people want to have their 5 mins of fame!! Economies suffer when people strike, and if our educated feel that striking and protesting are the only way to get things done, then we are in trouble...

I really don't think any of these students know who he is, let alone care.

They'll lunge at any excuse just to get out of the class room and toi toi outside on the streets

When were you there?

You'll look like a prime arsehole if it was before 1994.

Wicked typical fox network type response from the usual suspects :p

Lets see you criticise a female students response and then tie it to the guy calling for the march?

"They had private security people monitoring who comes in and who goes out. Some of the students were barred and most of these were black or Indian," he said.

Is that a clearer? less ditzy statement?

btw.. this IS a problem. wits is a university, if students are not given access to university which they entitled(they say access gates so we not talking about the building of conference).. this is a problem

Ever heard of 3 sides to a story?

its definitely just a handful of Keyfieh wearing Palestinian Solidarity members making noise again! I was at Wits for a while and I am very familiar with that crowd, all they do is paint graffiti on that wall and drink hot beverages at the student centre.

So move along, nothing to see here people!

Pretty much describes 90% of the time *I* spent at varsity... but do I get banned from anything? No! And it's not fair! I want to be discriminated against too!
