Wits University Internet

Yup. It can pull quite a few MB/s on a 1Gbps connection! I hope you did the test after midnight, or whenever it is the cheapest tariff!

Luckily when I "tested" the new Seacom connection at Stellenbosch University it was free, so I downloaded the Fedora DVD ISO quite a few times to get a good average speed.
Unfortunately for me, the PC's HDD was too slow to download any faster, because I hit like 35MB/s from a single server in Italy, which was pretty difficult to find like 3-4 years ago...

Wait till lectures actually start. My gf is forever complaining of the speed of the internet there.

Yeah it is a lot slower when everyone is there. But the SA speed is always good - you can stream 1080p youtube 98% of the time no buffering (the youtube cache is local). But yeah international can get slowish, but I've never seen worse than 1.5mbps international during term time which is still useable. Unless you're downloading which you shouldn't really expect the uni internet to provide for. Most of the big uni's have around 400-500mbps of international bandwidth. You can see all the different uni's usages and speeds at monitor.net.tenet.ac.za quite interesting.
