Hi guys,

I've just bought the TP-link TD-W8961ND wireless router the other day with the hopes that I will still get decent network speeds. We have 4 pc's all connected with 150N dongles. We had a 100mb router previously all connect via cable and I thought we would with the new 300mb N router get at least the same or even better network (copy) speeds.

Now my questions goes out to those of you who have about the same setup. At the moment we are getting speeds around 2-3mbs. Is this the kind of speeds we can expect? We're all getting at least 80% signal to the router and as far as I can see it's not the signal limiting our network speed.

Any help/advise?

Thanks in advance!

Try choosing another channel in the router setup. There may be congestion on that channel. Check transfer speeds with only one PC, then compare to four.

(If you have an Android phone, get an App "Wifi Analyzer" ) shows channels

Thanks for the replies.

I've done extensive tests on my side, from changing the channel (I'm on a channel non of my neighbors use), only having 2 pc's connected (tested by copying a big file) and changing the security options. Nothing seems to improve my transfer rates.

What I really want to know is if anyone is getting any decent transfer rates over the network using wireless? From what I've read on international forums is that I should be looking at at least 50mbps. Can anyone confirm that?

Maybe, if both dongles & AP set to use 40MHz channels. Your 150Mbps dongles only support a single channel (no MIMO), so you won't be able to utilize your AP's dual channel capability (i.e. 2 x 40MHz). I get ± 70-80Mbps between laptops & AP all with dual channel capability.

My AP is set to 20/40 MHz, only option available. So you reckon if I get 300Mbps dongles that support dual channel it should be much faster? I could only wish for those kind of speeds.

On another note, it read some reviews on the router and it falls very short when it comes to wireless transfers. If only I read the below review before I purchased the router :(

i transfer between my computer and Cellphone (galaxy S2) at 6mb/s :P so thats even better, between the laptop it sits at 9mb/s.

Though my girlfriends laptop, which is wireless G, goes at like 2.5mb/s and slows down everything! make sure no G devices are connected to your N network. maybe put it on N only ?

Router is set to N only. I've done a test with my computer connected via cable and my buddy with his 300 dongle, even then I only manage to get 4mb/s.

I'll purchase a 300 dongle in the week and then do another test to see if there is any increase. If not, then it's just the router that's crap...

I had a problem with my wireless home network being very slow. Eventually tried 5GHz signal and problems were over. Exactly 10MB/s over the network. Some PC's were receiving very poor signal though so wired them all up anyway. All the PC's had good quality wlan cards with 2 antennas btw.

For the lan, wired connection will be faster than wireless.

Only if there are issues receiving the signal.
