Every time I watch a movie or clips using WMP it freezes for about 5 - 10 seconds when forwarding the video to a different part.

Music also takes a quite a few seconds to load, seems almost like a hung app, but then comes alive. Songs I am playing now are also jumping now and again.

Could this be a codec issue or is WMP just rubbish? What free alternatives are there? What codec’s would you recommend?

Well the only 2 codecs i use are the matroski mkv codec pack and the divx codec pack.

Grim download winamp and see if you have the same problem, if you do i would advise uninstalling your codecs, sometimes codecs can conflict if you install to many of them.

Have you tried to play a file off the same driver as your windows install does it do the same thing?

I am actually not sure what codec’s I have running, no aftermarket ones to my knowledge as I don't have any in my installed list.

I think I avoided downloading all those codec packs for that very reason, you end up with 20 different codec packs and gets all messy. I don’t even know what all those codec’s in those packs do.

I will give Winamp a go, even though I am not a fan of it. I will also give those codec’s you mentioned a go.

Thanks

No i am just suggesting winamp so you can see if it has the same outcome, i use wmp for all my movies :).

Sorry i forgot i do not use the divx one anymore i just install this one and everything works 100%

Yeah cool, I am actually going to give it a go, last version I used was when Will Smith released that cheesy track "nod your head", so maybe it has improved since then ;) :D

I have the same problem with my WMP... Wanted to download some codecs, but I got redirected to diffirent pages the whole time, so I just got myself VLC... Works great ;) *edit* But for music get winamp...

It seems those codecs have managed to resolve the problem, thanks Killadoob
