The USA women's soccer team went into the playoff rounds of the women's World Cup as heavy favorites, and eventually reached the end. However, Japanese squad outplayed the American squad in a shootout in additional time. USA team defeated by Japan in World Cup final. The game was tied after overtime, then the Japanese team successfully sent three shots into the net, and the American women only managed to put in one. Many people felt that the underdog Japanese team deserved the victory to lift spirits in Japan, after natural disasters ravaged the nation earlier this year. This is the first time an Asian nation has won the Women’s World Cup final. China came close in 1999, when the Chinese team lost by one point in a shootout with the United States team.
