so i have always avoided anything named wondershare like the plague - for no reason in particular.
but about 3 months back i downloaded this app - for macbook pro.
the purpose was for converting music and videos to and from different formats - something i do on a very regular basis.

in the past i have usually used the relevant app within the os.
or for music: audacity (amongst a couple of others).
video has been handbrake, mpeg streamclip, quicktime pro.

turns out the wondershare app does everything better and quicker.
i have done side by side comparisons - for example using a .mov file & converting to mpeg-4 (using same frame rate / dimensions etc).
wondershare produces the same result as handbrake etc - but only quicker.

i've taken a very careful look at the videos converted by wondershare on both the laptops and tv - and there simply is no difference to be noticed in terms of quality etc.
I've also taken a close look to see if wondershare is up to anything else in the background - but found nothing.

3 months laster after continual & extensive use, i remain impressed - so much so that i now intend downloading from the developer and paying for the app (current version being used came from the high seas)
In my 20yrs or so of using macs, this is only the 2nd time i have done this - the other app was called sharepod (about 15yrs back or so) that allowed you to transfer music from ipod back to laptop.

Why manually convert files and things when you could just stream them directly in any format with something like Plex or Jellyfin?

stream from where and to what ?
not going to work.

most are recordings from phone or laptop
this leaves unnecessarily large .mov files . . soos vir dit:

hence the conversion to .mp4

it does - it does a very good job of it too.
i use it quite a bit.

something interesting i have found with handbrake is it's ability to "fix" certain videos downloaded from youtube (where others fail).
from time to time a video throws up some "unplayable" error code.
run it thru handbrake, and handbrake fixes whatever it was that caused it not to play .

given my level of mistrust, i initially ran uniconverter after killing any internet connection - fully expecting it to stop in its tracks and throw out error messages nothing happened, it completed its tasks without incident.

i also ran it while running "little snitch", watching for outgoing connections - nada.
also ran it - again fully expecting all manner of background activity, but again, nothing.

cant comment on any other of their products, but this one (perhaps their only one) is clean

i've been using handbrake for 10 to 15yrs now.
mpeg streamclip for about 10yrs.
both are very good - handbrake being the more "excacting" of all.

i have tried using a particular video as a " benchmark" and used handbrake, mpeg streamclip & uniconverter to convert from .mov to .mpeg-4.
all using default "same as source" settings.
all produce a similar (visually - and audio indistinguishable ) result.
uniconverter does the same job a whole lot quicker.

given my mistrust for wondershare, i had specifically set out trying to find fault and reason not to use it, but thusfar come up empty handed.

i would be rather interested to see comment from someone involved in video editing as a profession to run side by side tests using handbrake, uniconverter and mpeg streamclip - all with default "same as source" settings

They would use Adobe Media Encoder or something like Voukoder. For video editing, the power lies in exporting and then encoding. HandBrake is a good practical standard.

What is your use case? You can also look into something like Shutter Encoder, but that is more geared toward broadcast, though neat given the options. I like Shutter Encoder.

Content creators, the everyday content creator, would export and then upload to a service like YouTube, where the encoding would be done.

I have never used UniCoverter, but I have EaseUS VideoKit. Is it better than HandBrake, no, but it is ready to use.

my use - primarily converting .mov to .mpeg-4.
just regular everyday stuff - no need for uhd / broadcast quality

uni is very user friendly - for example batch converting - just drag them all into the window - done.
mpeg streamclip is a winner when combining multiple videos into one single file.
have not tried EaseUS VideoKit yet.
going to give shutter a go

Next time just upload the file to VirusTotal, or install and then zip up the files and then upload the whole zip to Virustotal.

In addition newer Mac processors have built in hardware encoders as have Nvidia GPUs.

Max series of CPUs have twin encoder engines for encoding:

The supported hardware-accelerated encoding codecs are:
    • H.264
    • HEVC (H.265)
    • Apple ProRes
    • ProRes RAW
