Looking to install wooden or laminate flooring in our main bedroom but not sure what to get or from whom in the Johannesburg area.

Spoke with a guy a few months back and he mentioned that there was an alternative out now similar to laminate that is water resistant and doesn't warp. Anybody heard or know about this?

Any advice that you can share around what to get and the cost of doing so would be appreciated.

You can opt for bamboo flooring and the last time I checked, what I wanted was around R500 or so per square meter (including trim and installation). Its still cheaper than other types of woods though. It was these guys : http://www.bamboowarehouse.co.za/exotic-bamboo-flooring and while I didnt end up using them they were quite helpful.

I ended up getting laminate flooring from Floorsdirect (Strubensvalley) and put in a cheapy version (R120 per square meter incl installation). I was fussy on the color and the laminate was the color I wanted, so not much choice. It was still rated AC4 though. Service was excellent.

Floors direct have stores all over JHB and they are usually very well stocked. The laminate floors I had were from them and they never warped or got damaged by water.

It's a lot like paint though, always get an extra box as they may discontinue your specific colour.

EDIT: Oh, and the also have bamboo if you want to go that route.

I'm looking at getting laminated flooring in my house as well but am just curious as to how they go about it. Would they rip up the tiles (that I currently have) or do they just lay the flooring over the existing surface?

I'd also like to get the skirting redone. Is this a separate cost or does it come as standard with the flooring?

You can choose... They may just lay if over the tiles you already have (it will be cheaper), or you can get the tiles removed.

Also got our floors done by floors direct. Very good and professional.

Our first set of floors were going over uneven tiles which would have caused issues so the guys had to screed the area over the tiles. Floors we're put in and did not have many issues with the floor since (except one area of the floor when we put a heavy pool table) it is now starting to gap slightly which is our fault not theirs.

Our second area that we put the floors in we're in the bedrooms but since it was carpeted the floors were level and they just needed to remove the carpet and then lay the floors,

Skirting a are extra costs with the floors. But rather get them into give you an actual quote for the area.

Has anyone used bamboo warehouse? Current laminate did not last more than 5 years with little wear (sounds hollow on some sections and some panels shift) - I doubt it is fixable as it looks of the rather cheap kind. TBH, I have not done much research, I just prefer wood over carpets/tiles. The area is main bedrooms interleading into en-suite bathroom so concern is moisture/water dropping on the floor (which is not an issue now) and also "pet traffic" (dogs/cats - so a bit wary about scratching the floor) - anyone got some feedback?
