Woolies Dash dark stores win

Woolworths says its dark store supporting the Woolies Dash on-demand delivery service in Cape Town has been a big success, significantly improving efficiency and allowing the retailer to offer more delivery slots in the area.

A Woolworths spokesperson told MyBroadband that the retailer plans to launch more dark stores and hopes to announce its next dark store soon.

Several CEOs and leaders at Woolworths have offloaded their shares and consequently received a huge paycheck.

not gonna lie. At 1st glance thought thread was my darker brothers got a specific store and were dashing out of woolies now

The Woolies food section in the Adderly street store never really recovered after Covid and the fact that there is a woolies food store in foreshore close to the media 24 and Takealot building which draws a lot of people
So it was quite a good idea to convert the one in Adderly street to clothing only and a food delivery depot ie a dark store

Why is it dark? I don't get it.

A dark store is effectively a store that is closed to the public that only exists to serve online orders. It often has a similar layout to a regular store in terms of shelving etc but product placement would differ to ensure quicker "shopping" by the pickers.

In the case of on demand delivery the biggest advantage is that you don't need to concern yourself with annoying existing customers so you can have any many people running around with scanners as required.

What a daft name then.

The quicker retailers realise that this was a true prophecy about human needs, they more money they'll make. It'll destroy malls, though, unless people can wizz around in their loungers...

Sounds like a warehouse though?

Same as dark kitchens it's not open to the public and only used for deliveries. Much better than Checkers 6060 where the store aisles are blocked by bag packers and blocking every customer.
AND driving their trolleys over our feet.
They are worse than the taxis!
Checkers had better sort out this crap, or more peeps are gonna stop shopping there.

It actually sounds far more stupid than a warehouse.

Why go outfit an entire shop which now needs to be packed...only so someone can manually come and "shop" on behalf of someone else.

Why not do the entire thing at the warehouse and then automate it while there?

I don't really have any issue with them shopping....but please turn the ****ing beeping on those scanners off or at least turn it down.

**** me it's annoying.
