Does anyone know which Woolworths in Cape Town have an in-store bakery? I know V&A and Constantia Village do but are there are any others? Trying to get some of their rolls and pastries, they're amazing.

Off hand, Palmyra Woolworths (in Claremont) is the only one other than those you mentioned, remember it's not in Cavendish Square its on the other side of the line opposite the bus terminus :)

We've got one here up in in Sunningdale (Parklands area). They make a hit-or-miss ciabatta which they can sometimes really get right (and other times they screw it up). I would say that their bakery is good but you can get a lot better.

Interesting little tidbit that I got from one of their bakers, apparently their Doughnuts, Croissants etc are brought in frozen from France. So in theory you could get them frozen from your local baker and do them yourself :)

While we are on the topic... They sell a box of 4 donuts for R31 which have strawberry and cream icing and pastry cream piped inside. They are the best I have ever tasted. They also have a chocolate flavoured one which is almost as awesome.

Do it.

What do you mean by "your local baker"

Woolies donuts sold in the bread section are made by compass bakery which makes most all their baked goods http://www.compassbakery.co.za/ in Kommetjie. They have a factory shop.

Seapoint Woolies at La Luz Plaza has bakery. Only hot savouries - pies and chickens

Woolies pies are some of the worst pies you can buy. I've tried them a few times just to make sure that it wasn't a fluke, they sucked every time.

I am looking for the proper bakeries, i.e. the ones which make bread, rolls, croissants etc. Like someone else mentioned, they bring in the croissants and other stuff from france

Also in Cavendish. A very nice Woolies bakery there!

I hadn't bought one for years and just tried the pepper steak. It was horrrid. The meat was disguised by lashings of white pepper.
It wouldn't surprise me what I ate was not a beef. But these are messy messy things. Flakes of pastry everwhere .
If you have to eat one rather eat over the sink.

Must be French rejects.

Agreed...totally yummy.

I *think* the one in Gardens centre might? Or maybe it's just hot savouries, I'm not actually sure.

Where does one buy decent pies these days?
