Wordpress and creating a custom user details form with custom database

Hi,

I need to create a custom form where users can register on a Wordpress website. The registration page will ask for personal info, work info and the ability to upload a profile pic. Once in they will get an auto email with login details, and can log in via the login page. Once logged in they can update their profile info and will have access to member only parts of the website. I will also need a admin back-end to manage the profiles (enable/disable them)

Anyone done this sorta custom dev in Wordpress? I have an idea of what needs to be done. Was going to take the default WP page, copy it and then add my own form with fields and connect it to a database I create.

If there is an easier way, Im all ears

I've used the 'Cimy User Extra Fields' plugin along with 'theme-my-login' and 'theme-my-profile' plugins.
