Work is progressing at Eskom's Medupi power station construction site, the parastatal said on Friday.

"Work is progressing well on unit six, the first unit of the power station that is scheduled to be synchronised at the end of the year," Eskom said in a statement.

Progress included undertaking chemical cleaning of the boiler.

"Chemical cleaning is required to ensure that residual contamination and excess depositions do not contaminate product or cause severe damage to rotating machinery or valves."

The chemical cleaning comprised a number of successive steps, including high-speed flushing to remove loose debris, Eskom said.

"This is one of the steps in preparing the boiler for the chemical clean medium injection.

"The complete chemical clean pipe system was leak-tested and pressure-tested."

The first synchronisation of Medupi Unit Six would be in December.

The project is TWO YEARS overdue and Eskom describes this as "work progressing well"? Speechless.

News flash. Medupi's 800MW Unit 6 will make absolutely ZERO difference to our dire power situation as this is just one tiny amount of electricity. If demand increases just 2% next year, that's already 800MW. If one generator at another power station goes down, that's 600-800MW lost. It is like a candle in a cave.

We will only be in a safe reserve margin situation end of 2016.

+1. Did they release this info in light (no pun) of the recent discussions about privatizing Eskom; give some form of closure that operations are underway n all?

News flash.

Remove that flash, we need to save electricity!
