Buddy of mine works at McDs. Think he said he gets R1500 every fortnight? Not sure though, suddenly sounds too much.

Not really, depends on the job description. Also you will probably be working on revolving shifts at the 24 hour branches, your contract/job requirements will most likely say your shift after 5pm fall under flexitime and is not considered as overtime.
That's +- R3000 a month - sounds like minimum wage to me.

Nope it's more like 26 days a month at 9 hours a shift. But yup it does work out to R12 an hour or so.

Now that you guys put into perspective, that's actually peanuts, but he still lives with his parents so that probably works for him, but how do people support their families on that??

By living on a cheaper lifestyle, eat chicken instead of prawns, take a taxi instead of driving a car and etc.

It's not quite that simple, what about accommodation? Unless you're staying with family, it's hardly ideal.
I would imagine most of them live in largish households in townships, maybe 6 to 8 people in a small cinder brick house/decent shack, with 2 or 3 breadwinners each earning R1000-R3000 a month. They use taxis to work, eat basics like maize and cheap meat/chicken and their children go to free government schools. They use state hospitals. Maybe one or two grandparents in the household get a R1000 old grant each month. They have free basic electricity and water. No bond as the house was built on state land over many years by the grandparents or parents.
If you are honest with yourself and took away: your bond, car payments, clothing accounts, school fees, medical aid etc. you probably only spend a couple of grand a month of basics like food and utilities and a taxi to work would cost you maybe R600 a month at most.
It is not a nice way to live, but there are millions of unemployed people with nothing.

Income: State subs, Salary.
Expenses: Very basic foods, No mortgage, no insurance, no medical, no school fees.
Very tough life
Some ending up striking, rioting. Some resort to crime.

Rent : R250 - townships
Transport - R20 p/d or lift clubs ( R300 p/m)
....
Buy food in bulk ( 5kg chicken - R78)
12.5kg maize meal - R48
and ...
As for saving - Stokvel contributions - R250 p/m them in December you have (r250 * 11)

Not necessary maybe the people they employ have people's skills! Aren't shy around people, don't bring home issues to work with them.
Noticed in other industries they get paid well but have the worst attitudes ever, down the road the people are at ease,friendly, greet & smile. If the air is polluted then it isn't a happy environment at all.
OP, everything depends on the work environment example your employer is he/she a nice person to get along with or on your case 24/7.
Do you enjoy Steers food or Mcdonalds? example if you work for any you get free food.
