Working class white kids underperforming in schools [UK]

Figures show that just 32% got at least five C grades at GCSE last year.

It compares to 61.5% of poor children from an Indian back-ground and 76.8% with Chinese roots.

A report into the under-achievement of white working-class children was carried out for MPs on the Commons Education Select Committee.

It also found that white British children from disadvantaged families spend less time on homework.

They also have a higher absence rate from school. One of their recommendations is longer school days to give them some-where to do their homework.

Committee chairman Graham Stuart said: “Poor white British children now come out of our schools with worse qualifications than equally poor children in any other major ethnic group.

“We don’t know how much of the under-performance is due to poor attitudes to school, a lack of work ethic or weak parenting.”

The report says: “Unless steps are taken, the potential of white working-class children will be left unlocked, and the effects of the current trend will con-tinue to be felt beyond the school gates.”

In the US there are articles which show that East Asians outperform the whites, who outperform the Latinos who outperform the blacks, even when corrected for socio-economics.

In the US it seems that East Asians perform much better too, at least because they actually prep for SAT courses.

I dunno about Indians, but in the US it's the East Asian i.e. Han Chinese, Japanese and Korean ancestry which seems to predict better academic achievement then "Asian" per se.

Although if you compare IQ averages of countries like HK and Japan vs Germany, Austria and Poland, you'll find they're the same.
