Working from home downsides

I'm glad...ish I'm back at the office. I didn't switch off at home.

However I did move super close to my job before the fuel prices skyrocketed and the loadshedding stuffed up traffic. So for me at least I have the benefit of not having to deal with soul destroying travelling, I prefer a good separation between my personal life and work life.

I do hate getting super formally dressed every week day though. But honestly that's the biggest gripe I have.

I never want to work in an office again. Although I like the option to come into the office once a week or so, if I feel like it. It's nice to get out of the home environment sometimes. But it seems to me that the biggest downsides to working from home are for office landlords

AdvantagesDisadvantages
No commute
Increased home office costs
Less sickness
Less work/life balance
More time for fitness and hobbies
Flexible work hours
Work and live anywhere
Isolation
Workplace disconnect
Less face-time with coworkers

FTFY ;)

The disadvantages on that article are hilarious.
  1. "Isolation" - I don't have to listen to annoying smalltalk while trying to focus. I can also join online meetings with my international clients without having to find a separate room.
  2. "Increased home office costs" - Aside from paying around R60/month more for electricity, and having to pay for loadshedding equipment, I already had a desk, a chair and a second monitor. And buying all those things has been a fraction of what the fuel cost getting to work for the last three years would have been. Rent has gone up, though, because I needed more space for a private work area, though it's still cheaper than paying for fuel.
  3. "Less work/life balance" - I get to have lunch with my girlfriend and sit on the couch and work if I'm feeling a bit under the weather. No commute mens I can wake up later or spend time doing the things I want. I can help out more with chores, and have more time to prepare meals in time I'd spend sitting in traffic. If I feel like taking a nap half way through the day I can. As long as I get my work done, who cares how or when I do it?
  4. "Workplace disconnect" - This means there is no obligation to respond to work bs after hours. Also has nothing to do with working from home - you can still be on your knees sucking, working from the office at 7PM.
  5. "Less face-time with coworkers" - this one I'll admit is a disadvantage. However, we still have an office we can go to if we want. And I can schedule to see the coworkers I actually like, rather than having to see all of them face-to-face.

I'll never work from an office again, unless I change my career path to something more hands-on, like working on physical products.

Disagree on work/life balance being a disadvantage. Further FTFY:

AdvantagesDisadvantages
No commuteIncreased home office costs
Less sickness"My filthy rich greedy executives are upset that they are being questioned as to why their profits have grown, yet nobody is using their fancy stupid offices that cost several billion dollars over the past decade. They are making me and other people write articles like this, because they are actively lobbying to get people back into the office, because they invested a shitload of money into buying property that is going down in value because it's now useless."
More time for fitness and hobbies
Flexible work hours
Work and live anywhere
Isolation
Better work/life balance
Workplace disconnect
Less face-time with coworkers

Sure I put in solar which means I actually have better load shedding protection then the office

It is interesting seeing a few companies and news firms come up with some research and evidence supporting the need for having workers work at the office. In my opinion, most of those reasons fall flat.

I hope WFH remains a thing. Even the hybrid model of X number of days at the office wouldn't work for me.

Disadvantages
Isolation
Wife, dogs and psychologist is enough for my thanks

Increased home office costs
Don't worry yourself about my finances

Less face-time with coworkers

There is an app for that.

Workplace disconnect

Oh yes.... not being connected to the office building and my CEO on his private island in another country is really hurting my soul...

Less work/life balance

That's what you think ol' chum. Nothing a door to a dedicated office cannot fix.

I'm an office or onsite worker, period. Plus, it is tricky to manage contractor h&s from home. Biggest drawback with WFH is unfortunately the noisy and nosy fam members

Well I'm 30 on the dot now. Been WFH long before covid was even a thing. Here's my list of disadvantages.

Disadvantages:

None.
Are you perhaps not a social bloke? I for one am & I miss water cooler talk when not in the office.

Then again people are wired differently & for some work people = only work people.
