Hi All, I am struggling to find the info online as most searches lead me to people who are looking at emigrating..

I am trying to find information on the implications of a South African citizen, who whats to remain living in South Afirca, but working remotely for a foreign country. i.e. Getting employed by a company in Sweden but working from South Africa.

What are the visa requirements for this if any
What are the tax implications of this
Anything else to be aware of?

Appreciate any input or links to any reading material etc.

Regards,

1. Zero visa requirements unless you need to travel there.
2. Tax is tricky for them more than you. You pay tax on your worldwide income so you will be taxed according to the progressive rates based on income level. You will likely do a provisional tax return for this. For them they have to consider whether they trigger a taxable presence in SA - this is a them issue though but might be a reason not to hire in another country. Some companies usually have local companies that you work under to avoid this. If you receive any FX you need to convert it within a month according to SARB if im not mistaken.
3. Nothing else really its a remote position - WFH but foreign employer. I guess you need to neg leave wont be bound by SA labor law.

1. No - unless you're leaving SA to travel there.
2. Hire a tax consultant.
3. Enjoy

Thanks for the feedback guys, really appreciated it, especially for that level of detail @Snyper564

@Priapus I think your option 2 will be the best course of action, thank you

Definitely get a professional to help with taxes if the company doesn't do local payroll. A good tax practitioner will also make sure you don't pay more tax than you have to.

Some companies that work with global employees may actually use third party services (like remote.com) that allows them to work with your local labour laws and such, and includes payroll.

No requirements.

Simplest Solution:

You switch on your PC. Do your work. Switch off.

When you get your money, you pay PROVISIONAL TAX to SARS as if you working for yourself. This is done twice a year. First payment is based on an estimate. Second payment is the correct amount.

When you apply for anything credit related, you work for your self and deal with it like a self employed person. You need at least a steady income for 6 months as a good credit record.

Prefered solution by the Government:

If the company wants to comply with SA Labour law, they can go through an Employer of Record (EOR), some accountanting firms offer the service. On your contract the EOR will show as your employer oand they will do your Payroll, PAYE, UIF, Compensation etc and deal with any employment issues on behalf of the company.
