The people who run speedtest.net and pingtest.net have release a new world broadband survey. It is at http://www.netindex.com. It has statistics by country, city and carrier.

South Africa ranks 96th in the world, with average download speeds of 2.22 mpbs and upload speeds of 0.71 mpbs.

Interestingly, about half the top countries are in Eastern Europe.

Let us just put this report into perspective - there are 160 countries rated. South Africa is No. 96. That means SA is below the top 50%.

Several African countries have speeds much faster than SA's and yet SA is considered the power house of Africa. Is it not supposed to be in the lead in this for it to actually warrant this status (Africa's powerhouse). Just to name a few of the African and other troubled countries with faster speeds:
- Ghana
- Rwanda
- Bosnia Herzegovina
- Four places from SA is Mozambique on No. 100
- Uganda
- Tunisia
- Tanzania
- Trinidad & Tobago
- Kazakstan

Totally disappointing reading.
