World Call scam has clients dialling duds

Australian tourist Richard Cox got his first taste of fraud in South Africa when he recently bought R100 Telkom World Call phone vouchers that turned out to be used.

Cox bought the vouchers at Pick 'n Pay.

The general manager of cellular at Pick 'n Pay, Warren Marsden, said Telkom had admitted to the company that hackers had accessed its computer and stolen batches of 16-digit personal identity numbers (pins) used to dial out on the cards.

"We have shut down sales of World Call in all our stores and will refund customers who purchased the vouchers today or even yesterday, if the pins have been used fraudulently," said Marsden.

Whoa! That's a bit of a security breach there Telkom. Pray tell what other information did said hackers have a look at?

Thats quite a feat considering that Telkom uses RSA security dongles (access code changes every couple minutes), unless they did'nt config the Worldcall server with the software.
