And organisers slam naysayers who question success of event

Announcing that two of the three million available tickets had been sold, Fifa and Local Organising Committee heavyweights also took the opportunity to slam the naysayers - who include international football players, officials and club managers.

Another positive sign is that South Africans - whom the LOC earlier this month said were slow at purchasing tickets - were responsible for 79% of the 1.2million applications for tickets in the third phase of sales, which ended on January 22.

So screw all those who claimed that white South Africans were hoping the WC would fail "to prove a point". I'm am excited, I am patriotic and I am confident, considering the IPL in 2009 was so well done, in spite of only 14 days preparation (well done Francois!).
 
Lets examine the facts in that opening post:
A. 2 million tickets sold.
B. 1.2 million tickets sold in 3rd phase.
C. 79% of B was bought by South Africans.
D. Phase 1 and 2 sold 0.8 million tickets.
E. South Africa has purchased 948000 tickets in phase 3.
F. Non South Africans have purchased 252000 tickets.

So, so far they have admitted to 252000 seats being filled by tourists.
The tournament is running for 30 days.

That's 8400 tourists a day that need a place to stay.

400,000 tickets still must be sold in phase 4.
But, the article does not detail the break-up of the first 800 000 tickets sold in phase 1 and 2.

How do you know some tourists are not here on holiday meaning it could be as many as 100000+ need a place to stay, are you just taking the amount of tourists and dividing by the days? That is not a good way to work it i don't think haha.

That's some rather bad logic. It assumes that each tourust is here for only 1 day, and that each person bought onlly 1 ticket.

Is your logic that one tourist bought 2 tickets for the same day?

I am just trying to get a picture of the real and actual guaranteed demand for accommodation.

I am finding it really difficult to get any information on the phase 1 and 2 tickets.
Anybody got any links or insider info?
 
Dave the way you worked it out is silly dude, just because a tourist buys only ticket, does not mean he arrives for one day and bam goes home the next.

You are looking at needing accommodation for 100000+ plus tourists a day, more than likely 300000+

No, look at it like this, if we say that 252 000 tickets were sold, we need to assume how many were bought per person, I will assume 2, so that mean 126 000 people. Then you need to know the length of the average stay, not sure with this, but probably 2 weeks?
 
I get what you both are saying, but i want the guaranteed figures.
A ticket purchased is a person in a bed.

Once I have those figures I can then throw in all the other speculation like "average" length of stay.
I remember FIFA originally organising official accommodation into 7 day slots, and I know that they're now re-factoring into 4 and 3 day slots.

There are many factors, but I want the solid base first, and am struggling to get the information.

Initial (optimistic) estimates were to expect half-a-mil tourists. And it looks like we'll fall well short of that number, so there can't be a problem with accommodation or anything like that. The small towns maybe.

Wonder who to believe? Even our NOC seems confused
 
That sucks, less chance of being successful in the ticket draw :(
Why cant people procrastinate till the last phase ;)

I think that most of those applications came in the last week of the phase.

Assuming that the tickets sold are just for the final then you'll need 252 000 beds (assuming that one ticket = 1 bed). If you consider an even spread over all matches then there are about 6300 foreigners per game, and with there being at most two games on a day, you'll need beds for 12 600.

Dave is correct is saying it would be nice to know the distribution of ticket sales over the duration.

I am sure that there are locals that want beds in some of the locations too.

A better metric would be to look at the number of inbound flight seats sold - that'll also give an indication of the spread.

Assuming that the tickets sold are just for the final then you'll need 252 000 beds (assuming that one ticket = 1 bed). If you consider an even spread over all matches then there are about 6300 foreigners per game, and with there being at most two games on a day, you'll need beds for 12 600.

How are you working that out? There are 32 teams and regardless of how many games there are a day tourists will come for more than the 1 day their team is playing and considering each team plays 3 times in the group stages i would imagine tourists will be here for a week or more so you will need atleast 100000 beds a night until the quarters i would imagine if not more.

If i am incorrect please correct me.

maybe it was going so bad they say "Hurry up there is only 1/3 of the tickets left!" to hopefully sell more tickets

It's here and we only have to hope for the best!!
Sheez stop being such nagging old wife’s!!

It’s here deal with it. If the ticket sales are low it’s because people are suffering from a bad economic time.
The fat years are over for a while.
