I just got "Pocket World in Figures 2008" with my subscription of The Economist. Some really cool/shocking numbers in there...

Most Road Deaths per 100 000 said:
1. Botswana 30
2. South Africa (!) 28
3. Malaysia 25
I did not know SA roads where that dangerous.

One of the more positive things (I thought SA would be #1 or #2):

AIDS prevalence 15-49y said:
1. Swazi 33.4%
2. Botswana 24.1
3. Lesotho 23.2
4. Zim 20.1
5. Namibia 19.6
6. SA 18.8

And some random SA stats:

==>97 men per 100 women

==>Population growth 0.55% pa

==>Fertility rate (per woman) 2.6

==>PCs per 100 ppl: 8.4

==>I don't see any SA cities among the top 47 Quality of life according to city. :( (Zurich wins btw)

==>Not on lowest 47 list either though. (Baghdad wins this one.)

Enjoy. Got to bounce & study for exams now...

Hate to break it to you, but most of those women will be in their 80s or 90s. Still, go ahead if it floats your boat. :D

This isn't really a mystery, in the UK/Europe:
  • Any bakkie/lorry carrying people on the back would be stopped as unsafe.
  • Most of our minibus taxis would be scrapped.
  • Most of our bus drivers would be in jail for exceeding their 4 hourly rest period.
  • Most of our lorry drivers wouldn't be able to get a licence.
I could go on but I've just rendered a good portion of the population unemployed with my above statements, not to mention jailed a few more.

We also have a lot more drunk drivers on the road. And the vast majority of SA motorists speed on a daily basis and ignore basic road rules.

The other thing that just blew my mind away was China. Population of 1,310 Million. SA is around 47 Million (+2 Million Zims). Thats like 26 Chinese for every Saffer.

US PCs per 100: 76.2

I wonder, does that include the PC's used by people at work? If so, the figure is even more shocking
No idea. The book is a bit thin on where they got the numbers from. I would assume it includes all PCs.

Yeah, but women tend to outlive men.

Actually the birth rate slightly favours men, so that at reproductive age the populations are exactly the same. By old age, the population starts strongly favouring women, hence my statement.

Not so sure about this one, can you provide some stats??

Agreed, but if you look at what I've said you'll see that they're "big wins" for a traffic department i.e.

  • Any bakkie/lorry carrying people on the back would be stopped as unsafe. (minimum 3 dead/injured)
  • Most of our minibus taxis would be scrapped. (minimum 1 dead/injured ... if taxi was empty)
  • Most of our bus drivers would be in jail for exceeding their 4 hourly rest period. (minimum dead/injured ... if bus was empty)
  • Most of our lorry drivers wouldn't be able to get a licence. (Minimum 1 dead ... but it depends on what they're transporting)

What I am looking at is reducing the death toll, not increasing a particular council's revenue because X councillor or Y person is outraged.
