Article is about alliances that exist between the various worldwide telecoms operators. Re-emphasises the point, to me at least, that we are just part of a larger, worldwide battle against telecoms companies who get together to discuss 'marketing concepts' (i.e. they get together to discuss how to confuse users in order to overprice their services. Remember, telecoms companies top the lists of the world's most profitable companies!)

MCA was launched in July 2004 and its founding members comprise Brasil Telecom, BT, Korea Telecom, NTT Com, Rogers Wireless Inc and Swisscom. Other members include AT&T Corp, China Telecom, Deutsche Telekom/T-Com of Germany, TRUE of Thailand and Telkom South Africa

The members of the alliance will collaborate on marketing concepts, product definitions and user experiences in different markets as well as ensure vendor support in the development of the right standards for devices and infrastructure equipment.

Telkom's right in there, flying the SA flag! What a surprise!

Well if it is a standards thing it is probably good, but if they are the turds who were responsible for the sudden International SMS price increases (a while back) for instance, then they are pure evil.

There was a time we could send sms messages for close to nothing...

When you think about it a short text message is much less info to relay than voice!

Antowan, in general, IMO, world telecoms allainces = bad for consumers. It's alliances like this that get together to create marketing and pricing strategy that will best hoodwink consumers. I'm sure there are some good things that come out of such alliances, but in general I think they are bad news for consumers.

Andrew Barendse, a candidate appointed to ICASA Council (has he accepted?), is an expert in regional regulation, and hopefully this will help us in the context of regional or worldwide telecoms alliances. Ok I didn't put that very well, but that's the best way I can say it right now.
