Worm or Virus or bug ?

Try loging on in safemode, then run virus scan but i would guess thats most likely a corrupt windows file, maybe try a systen restore

Checked system Restore checkpoints....last thing installed was MS Messenger 8 yesterday.

That little message you have there seems to be a command to connect to a botnet server, alt tab to try and get round it. Then uninstall the MSN. If this does not work, uninstall the MSN using safe mode and see if the problem is corrected.

Ahh good old re-format... works every time
I like to go even one better and rewrite the bootstrap files with zeros and get Windows to install a new partition.

Simple: You remove everything from the HDD, including the Cache. This leaves your drive with nothing on it at all - making HDD recovery impossible. (It's like a new drive) When you want to use the HDD again, you need to recreate the partition. (same as you do with a new drive)

File = 1 (valid or active file)
File = 0 ( invalid or no file )

I boot up my computer with a CD called MiniPe.
Under the heading Hard Drive tools there is a program called, "Fix MBR".
Cannot remember the command now, but I think it is simply, Fix MBR?
Then boot with the Windows CD and let it create a new partition for you.
There are many ways to sort out the bootstrap files. The main reason as Person would agree with me, is that you can never be sure if the Virus/Worm has not added something to it?
My neighbour had this problem the other day when an exploit in Real Player of all software, added code to the bootstrap files.

Ok i understand now, thanks for the answers. I must say the MinPe i downloaded was probably the most usefull 400mb i ever downloaded
