So firstly, I have posted this before but i's obviously not linked to what I thought was the problem, so I need to ask you guys again :D

I started up the PC from being off overnight and ......... blank screen! Went into blind panic mode (coz that's how us tech noobs roll ) and restarted again. Got to a page where it states that something went wrong due to a hardware/software change blah blah and it gives you options to start in safe mode, last known working configuration, etc (first time I've seen this so bear with not knowing what that page is). So I selected 'start windows normally' and everything went about as usual. This is now the second time it's happened so /me is in worry mode now.

So what I want to know is, was that crash hardware related or just some typical Windows foolery?

Oh Also, everytime I restart, certain small settings (taskbar related especially) go back to default? Why is the configuration resetting? And, can anyone tell me what that 'Execute' and 'Reboot Setup' is in the screenie below (it's in the startup menu)? Info appreciated. :D

do you have any sort of ram program on your pc

i mean something that speeds up your ram, free's up memory that type of program?

Nope /me doesn't. (well not that I installed/can see anyway)

execute.exe and delfolders.exe is from Elitegroup Computer Systems which is your motherboard manufacturer.

did u get a BSoD? Got a screenie(will have to take photo of it)?

what did u install before you got the error? mobo drivers and utilities perhaps?

No BSoD ....... no drivers updated in the last week and the last utility I installed was the new AdAware (2days ago) :o

The fact that this an intermittent problem might be because of corrupt file system or system files. I'd recommend to first do a
Code:
chkdsk /r
from the recovery console or from a command prompt and then choose "yes" to check the file system on next reboot. Reboot PC, wait for chkdsk to complete.

Then from start > run do a
Code:
sfc /scannow
- make sure you have your windoze disk in the drive. It will verify and fix all missing/corrupt system files.

Also make sure your system is free of any malware which might be causing all the hassles. Download Trend Micro Sysclean and relevant pattern files. run the .com file to start scanning.

Install updated drivers for your mobo from ECS website.

and that chkdsk /r and sfc /scannow won't destabilise anything further? I don't really feel like ending up doing reformats or whatever ....... tech noob here, hence the 20 questions.

well anything is possible with windows

shouldn't be a problem though. I've done it many times. But always be prepared for a total f**up. ;)

Ah the voice of assurance  .... lol. Maybe I'll just wait for it to fsck up totally and then format and start again ;)

(my Ubuntu must hurry up and arrive now so /me can start getting to grips with it :D)

so I know who to bomb with questions if I have any probs getting used to ubuntu then ;):D

There are alotta linux leets floating around these forums who would be happy to help you i'm sure. I'm also still learning but of course I would help wherever I can if you promise to help me as well :)
